RCMP youth academy returns to Prince George

Mar 11, 2023 | 11:58 AM

Prince George is hosting the 2023 RCMP Youth Academy in partnership with School District 57. The Youth Academy was put on hold for a few years but has resumed this spring break with 19 selected grade 11 and 12 students participating in the training. The program runs for a full week from March 12-17 and is being held at D.P. Todd Secondary School.

The Youth Academy is designed to give students a sneak-peek into the RCMP training academy known as Depot. Students will participate in various activities such as drill practice, handcuffing, and running the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation. The students will also attend classes in Indigenous Policing, Criminal Code offenses, and the powers of arrest, among other subjects.

The RCMP Youth Academy provides hands-on experience to students interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.

“The students participate in mock court trials and several different live-action scenarios that test the knowledge they have gained throughout the week. They will meet with police officers from Forensic Identification, Media Relations, and Police Dog Tactics and even take a tour of the RCMP hangar. Their days are long, beginning at 6:00 a.m. and running until 11:00 p.m. every day, simulating the workload we experience as recruits at Depot.” states Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.
