It is a move more than eight years in the making: Lufthansa Group is set to install Viasat‘s European Aviation Network (EAN) inflight connectivity solution on its fleet. The deal will see more than 150 additional aircraft add in-flight internet service on board, including the first Swiss single-aisle planes to get online.
We’re so pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with Lufthansa Group, bringing the consistent, seamless in-flight connectivity solution that passengers want via the European Aviation Network.
– Don Buchman, GM and VP, Commercial Aviation at Viasat
The deal with Viasat also covers a number Lufthansa and Austrian deliveries from the past few years which have been operating without internet services since joining the fleet.
Installations are set to begin at the end of 2024, with a two-year timeline for completing the work. The plan calls for fully equipping all currently dark aircraft in the Airbus A220/320 family (A220, A319, A320ceo, A320neo, A321ceo, A321neo) operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and SWISS, in total more than 150 planes. The existing 240 planes flying with the Ka-band GX Aviation connectivity will keep that kit.
The company also highlights that it now offers complimentary messaging on board, tied to a Miles & More loyalty program account. That offering went active earlier this month for the existing online fleet and will extend to the new installations.
