I'm at the NATO-run conference on Emerging Trends in Social Media in Riga, Latvia. I have to say, one of the best conferences I've been to recently. Such a diverse range of specialisms and interests represented which has made the panels and discussions really lively and much more nuanced. Here's my thoughts so far! 1️⃣ There have been various studies which have suggested generative AI will have as much or a greater impact on human productivity than the steam engine. Steam powered the industrial revolution in Britain, changing the nature of every industry from textiles to transport and Britain exploited its steam advantage to expand its influence globally. It took the best part of 100 years for steam technology to fully proliferate around the world from Britain. It took less than 100 days for ChatGPT to reach more than 1.5 billion users. Imagine how different our world would look now if the most powerful form of steam technology had been given to every person in every country at the same time. Think about that, because that's the world we just entered. How differently would we plan? How differently would we engage and look for opportunities and risks assuming this world could look vastly different thanks to the democratisation of power that generative AI has provided? 2️⃣ I personally think it's great that everyone gets to use this technology. It's democratic. It levels the playing field. However, there are many bad actors out there who do not care about the discussions we're having on regulation, transparency and 'nutritional labels' on gen AI content. What's worse, some of these bad actors have real malintent towards democratic institutions and our way of life. Their aim is to soe discord, ferment conflict and disagreement. They exploit our biases to do so and those biases are inherent in who we are, they are a weakness we have to work really really hard to recognise and defend against. Great talk from Derek Ruths on this, give him a follow. 3️⃣ While this event is focused mainly on state-level bad actors, there is an increasing overlap between state and commercial impacts. The image below is taken from a report by Microsoft analysing Russian-aligned attacks on Ukraine. It shows that while the Ukrainian government is the primary target, consumer retail, internet access, media and IT services are all being targeted with impacts on normal business for all industries. Are you prepared for deterring, detecting, disarming and defeating these kinds of attacks if your brand is impacted? More on that in the next post! #AI #ChatGPT #Disinformation #brandrisk

Thanks for sharing this Ant. Really useful.

Thank you for sharing. I look forward to reviewing the Microsoft report. There's so much mis and dis-information out there and even more so right now with the Middle East conflict and it's unfortunately mobilizing real-life harm to innocent people and sparking violent protests.

It’s not ‘if’ but ‘when’ there are significant AI-fueled misinformation campaigns against commercial entities. The cost is so small and the reward is so large.
