With six songs to spice up your SEO

Listen to the playlist on Spotify.

Happy Valentine’s Day lovers!

As a middle-aged, married with kids, working mum, V-Day kinda passed me by without much fanfare. (Expect for the heart-ish shaped crafts the kids brought home from school.)

Anyway, since I’ve long left the time of life when romance was a thing, I thought I’d celebrate this day of love with a list of songs designed to spice up your SEO and bring you some good old-fashioned Google lovin’.

I’ve even created this mood-setting playlist so you can set the scene for some search engine romance.

Words are all I have to take your heart away

Track: Words, Bee Gees

“Talk in everlasting words and dedicate them all to me.” Swoon! The Google gods are fainting at the sound of such sweet nothings. When it comes to optimising your website content, using the right keywords is the way to woo the best search engine rankings. The words you use and the places you use them will help the search engines understand what your website is all about. So use your words wisely and mean every single word you say.

All that I do (all that I do) is dream about linking with you

Track: Linking With You, MØ

MØ is a Danish singer, songwriter and record producer. But having read the lyrics to this song, I’m convinced MØ is a wounded SEO who’s been burned too many times by dodgy backlink attacks and endless nofollows from high authority sites. Despite the heartache, implementing a solid backlink strategy is essential to getting Google to fall for you, hard. So, start thinking about what to say to get yourself some juicy, relevant and strong backlinks from quality sites. It’s kinda like getting your friends to tell your crush how awesome you are.

Say what you wanna say, and let the words fall out

Track: Brave, Sara Bareilles

It’s easy to think you don’t have anything to blog about. Why would Google look your way? It’s all been done. It’s all been said. But it hasn’t been said by YOU. So, write that post. Put YOUR opinion out there. Sure, you might get a bit of backlash for a controversial view. But be BRAVE. Let the words fall out. Because I just wanna see you. And so do your customers.

I’m gonna go, go, go, there’s no stopping me

Track: Don’t Stop Me Now, Queen

Site speed is one of the signals used by the Google algorithm to rank web pages, so you’re gonna want to make sure your site loads like a racing car (passing by). Let those Google bots burn through the sky, and don’t let slow load speeds stop them from crawling your site. And if you want your users to have a good time, make sure your site travels at the speed of light.

Don’t tell me there ain’t no more

Track: Keep It Comin’ Love, KC and The Sunshine Band

This one is a case of doing as I say, not as I do. You see it’s been over a year since I last posted to my own blog (gasp!). Something about a builder’s house never being built… Anyway, don’t blow the search engines off and cool the romance by leaving the bots thirsting for more. Update your website regularly. It doesn’t have to be every week (but for the love of Google, don’t leave it a year like I did). Stay active on your website and your social channels. Keep it comin’ love. Don’t turn Google down and close your door.

Give it time, no matter how long it takes

Track: You Can’t Hurry Love, The Supremes

I know you might need Google love to ease your mind, but you can’t hurry love. SEO is a long game. It’s not a set and forget. You need to keep on top of it and keep working it. Keywords, backlinks, site speed, regular, relevant content. It all takes time. When you grow impatient and feel that you can’t go on, remember mama said, Google love don’t come easy.
