Why are so many articles about #AI illustrated with an image of a white, male humanoid robot? 🤖 And can we not do better? Those questions were the starting point for Visualising AI - a partnership between Google DeepMind and an incredible line-up of artists from around the world to create more diverse, accurate and accessible representations of AI, inspired by conversations with scientists, engineers, ethicists and more. See more here: https://lnkd.in/ecwN3qpS How we visualise AI and tell the story of this technology is an important - and often neglected - area of AI. - See research here, for example: https://lnkd.in/eQeKZU3x - Or the brilliant BBC & Tania Duarte Better Images of AI project here: https://lnkd.in/ethhExby Misleading representations can negatively impact public perceptions of AI and give people unrealistic expectations of technologies. Stereotypes also often exclude global perspectives, disregarding diversity and amplifying existing inequalities in society. The Visualising AI collection is one attempt to answer this. It comprises more than 100 artworks created by 13 artists and explores themes like digital biology, data labelling, the interplay of AI and society and AGI. And they're all available to download and use for free through Creative Commons on Unsplash and Pexels. Download images here: https://lnkd.in/eH_9ArS3 Download videos here: https://lnkd.in/ehsmyMkB We've been overwhelmed by the response, suggesting there is a clear need for an alternative approach. The images and videos have already had more than 100 million views, 800,000 downloads, and been used by media outlets, research institutions, civil society and more. And we're only just getting going - we've got so many plans for this project! Huge congratulations to the wonderful Gaby Pearl and Ross West who brilliantly conceived, created and led this project, supported by so many other brilliant people at Google DeepMind, including the Creative & Marketing team that I’ve been lucky enough to lead over the last 12 months. 🙏 Finally, a big shoutout to the wonderful Ruth Barnett, who also inspired this work all that time ago. 🚀
As an AI enthusiast, how we portray AI matters immensely. AI isn't just about white humanoid robots; it's a diverse and complex field encompassing many technologies and applications. It's crucial to break free from stereotypes and create representations that reflect the true essence of AI. The power of visuals cannot be understated, especially in shaping public perceptions. By showcasing AI through various themes like digital biology, data labeling, and its interplay with society, this project brings a holistic view of AI's impact. It's impressive that these artworks are available for free use, promoting broader understanding and discussions. Misconceptions about AI can lead to unrealistic expectations and missed opportunities. As #AI professionals, educators, and enthusiasts, we must actively engage in reshaping the narrative. Let's celebrate diversity, inclusivity, and innovation in AI visuals. Kudos to Google DeepMind, the artists, and everyone involved in this remarkable initiative for taking a stand and making a positive change. Together, we can craft a more accurate, relatable, and inspiring visual story of AI. #VisualisingAI #AIRepresentation #InnovationInAI #AIInclusivity
Spot on with this initiative! It's about time we bin the boring generic robot images and start showing AI in a way that doesn't make it look like it's about to take over the world and 1.7 billion people will have to retrain right? The 'Visualising AI' collection looks top-notch, and it's brilliant that it's available for free! It's great to see a positive response with a heap of views and downloads already. Is anyone else keen to have a gander at the collection and start using these images and videos?
I expect most peoples first contact with Ai that they are aware of is the speeding / phone use in the cars fines soon coming through the door , a trial of Ai cameras are to be rolled out across the U.K. after thousands were caught in a two week period .
We don't need to visualise AI as it can do that for itself; living quietly in it's parallel world while the rest of us carry on with our normal lives.
AI has to be controlled better than the WEB. It will be the downfall of critical thinking.
Oh. My. God. I love this!!!! ❤️
