New Presiding Judge appointed

The Lord Chief Justice, with the concurrence with the Lord Chancellor, has announced the appointment of a Presiding Judge.

Mr Justice Cavanagh has been appointed to the South Eastern Circuit where he will succeed Mr Justice Edis, who is to be elevated to the Court of Appeal.

The appointment is made from 1 January 2021, when the current Presiding Judge steps down, to 31 December 2024.

Background Information:

Mr Justice John Cavanagh was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1985 and took Silk in 2001. He was appointed a Recorder in 2004, a Deputy High Court Judge in 2017 and a High Court Judge (Queens’ Bench Division) in October 2019.

Presiding Judges are responsible for the deployment of the judiciary and allocation of cases on their Circuit. They also have a responsibility for general supervision of judges on their circuits.
