Jen Lawson, Member of the Regional Municipality of Niagara Police Services Board, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Police Governance (CAPG) for a two year term at its Annual General Meeting held on September 1, 2022.

“This is a great appointment for the Police Services Board, the entire police community and Niagara Region”, says Bill Steele, Chair of the Niagara Police Services Board.  “It also continues the great tradition of public service by Niagara Board Members well beyond the boundaries of our Region.”

Commenting on her new responsibilities, Member Lawson says, “I am honoured to serve on the CAPG Board of Directors.  This is an extremely exciting time in policing and for police governance across the country.  I look forward to contributing to the important advocacy work that is already underway by the CAPG to improve police governance and bring change that will enhance public safety.”

The Canadian Association of Police Governance (CAPG) is the only national organization dedicated to excellence in police governance in Canada.  The CAPG has been in existence for 33 years working to improve the effectiveness of civilian bodies that govern local police services.  Today, the CAPG represents 80% of municipal police service oversight bodies throughout Canada.

The Regional Municipality of Niagara Police Services Board is comprised of seven members, three members appointed from Regional Council, one private citizen appointed by Regional Council, and three provincial appointees.  It is the civilian governing authority for the Niagara Regional Police Service, the oldest regional police service in Ontario that patrols one of the largest geographical regions.  The Niagara Regional Police provides policing and public safety to 12 municipalities totally some 450,000 residents and an estimated 15,000,000 visitors annually.
