"How do I convince my boss to stop running gated e-books" 1.) Go to your CRM and calculate the # of e-book downloads converted into pipeline 2.) Calculate the CAC off those "leads" 3.) Show your boss and then propose a new plan with a new measurement of success. This will at minimum get the conversation started, then from there you can focus on the plan you feel will drive better results for your company. If anyone else has gone through this conversation, please share your story as I'm sure others will benefit. #demandgen #b2b #saas

Bottom line is most people do not 'Value' "Free stuff" They will download and let it sit there and probably never go back to it. I do it all the time thinking that will come in handy someday. But being honest with myself. very few are ever seen again. Stop 'Giving' out free stuff. Let them pay $39 and have it sit in their computer. At least you have gotten something for your IP. Thoughts? Provide content free via LI , etc, but SELL all ebooks. Sometimes making something seem a bit of a stretch encourages motivation. Has anyone ever done any analysis on free vs: pay for the same ebook? Just wondering.

Love how practical this is. It's not "NO WE NEED TO CHANGE THE ENTIRE MODEL". Instead, it's concrete, actionable steps. Nice Jonathan R Bland

Do a last-touch conversion to SQL analysis of content leads - you are going to find that it's tiny. Then look at how many of your SQLs consumed content. The message becomes clear that gating TOFU content is a waste of effort and getting more people consuming it is good for you. (More practically I would just ungate some stuff wthout telling the boss and then share the results)

What are people seeing with conversions from E-books?

I'm much less fussed about attribution than a lot of people are. I know that most people bounce when they hit a gate. I know that most content download leads don't convert. If we've got a compelling PoV on how our clients can achieve tremendous outcomes, I'd much rather freely share that perspective and all the accompanying stories and insights and data and everything else. I want to earn a place in the hearts and minds of as many of the right people as possible. I want to be in the consideration set *every time*. And I don't want to lose 80% or 90% of them at the gate and piss off a bunch of the rest by prematurely cadencing them when they're not yet ready for a sales conversation. If we freely share compelling content, we'll be rewarded in many ways. Direct traffic will increase. Demo requests and other high intent conversions will increase. Win rates will increase. Deal sizes will increase. Cycle time will be reduced. Customer retention and expansion will improve. I'll take all that, over time, rather than getting too caught up direct attribution.

How do you do attribution for ungated content? How do you connect an anonymous download with a lead? Ungated content drives brand awareness and distribution but how do you correlate that strategy to results? I'm sure Steve Watt has some thoughts.

How do you calculate the unit cost for an ebook preparation and marketing? Or do you just calculate CAC in the aggregate and back calculate a unit cost?
