The time I didn’t get hired at Facebook: (The recruiter’s email was just 1 line:) “Hi Eddie, let me know if you have a moment for a call?” I closed my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. “Fuck,” I said. Earlier that week, I flew to Menlo Park for my final-round interview. I was going for the ‘Content Creator’ position at Facebook. It was 2018, before the data debacle. I called Kelsey after. “How’d it go?” she said. “Yeh, alright," I said. (The recruiter’s call lasted just 1 minute:) “Hi Eddie,” she said, “we want to thank you for your time.” “Ah, I understand.” “It really was a very difficult decision.” “Thank you,” I said, “thanks for the opportunity.” (I made up my mind just a second after I hung up:) “I’m gonna send a newsletter every week,” I said. Before my Facebook rejection, my VeryGoodCopy emails were, at best, irregular. “Do it,” Kels smiled. And I did. In that moment, I committed to consistently creating and sharing and being helpful. (It made me feel better. And continues to make me feel good.) And you can too, especially if you’re feeling down and out, deflated, defeated. You can choose to be selfless with what you know — in a newsletter, or here on LinkedIn, or in some other way. (Not getting hired at Facebook was my impetus. Let this post be yours?) And you’ll see, it will make you feel better, good. And you’ll see, what you give, in time, will almost certainly find its way back to you: “You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.” ~ Zig Ziglar Your take? #copywriting #marketing #creativity #writing P.S. Hi Eddie Shleyner - your newsletter is the only one I happily read and forward. Thank you for bringing life back into my inbox :D
Consistency create massive outcomes… proud of all you continue to do.
it sucks. But the moment you get that rejection get to you, that's the moment you lose your focus, your drive, and everything. I say, move on to the next chapter
We are all thrilled they didn't hire you!
So inspiring!
Good one Eddie Shleyner .. verygoodcopy was indeed, a verygoodchoice in the end 😃
Hey Eddie Shleyner , I read your post via email earlier and thought I HAD to comment. I can really relate to this. A lot had happened at the start of this month. Told myself to learn more at an even faster pace and share my learnings. It might also help others. So I tried volunteering for a virtual sharing session with others who are learning digital marketing. My first! It felt good and I never knew I actually enjoy speaking in front of people! It takes nothing to give back. Just give it a shot! .... and be consistent with it!
I love this idea of rejection being the impetus to the change you needed to make. Something similar happened to me yesterday and what followed was a very productive day and some much needed clarity. Thanks for always bringing the goods. Already a sunscriber 👊🏼
Interesting! I second this mindset and love your action oriented approach Eddie Shleyner
