.NET MAUI Release Delayed to 2022

By | September 15, 2021

Good news and not so good news. First the good news. A new Preview for .NET MAUI became available on September 14, 2021. There are several changes, with the most important being that MAUI is now integrated into the workload installer (as an optional package under the Mobile Development workload) and you can now create a new MAUI app solution from the File->New Project popup. There are some new things, however, that need to be done manually when setting up Visual Studio and a .NET MAUI solution. Specifically look for the information about the JDK, and editing the MAUI project file to enable Windows support. I plan on updating my previous posts to reflect the new setup procedures and any other changes.

Now the not so great news. The official .NET Blog has the following statement:

The .NET team has been working hard with the community in the open on its development and we are committed to its release. Unfortunately, .NET MAUI will not be ready for production with .NET 6 GA in November. We want to provide the best experience, performance, and quality on day 1 to our users and to do that, we need to slip the schedule. We are now targeting early Q2 of 2022 for .NET MAUI GA.

There is also an updated roadmap on GitHub. So we won’t be seeing a GA release of MAUI until April 2022 at the earliest. I respect that they want to get this right and provide a great experience on day 1, hopefully this extra time will make that a reality.

OK! None of us professionals has never before experienced a similar situation on our own projects. Do it right, guys 🙂 We trust in you!
