This year I consulted with more than 250 designers and design founders! Throughout these conversations numerous themes came up. Here's what I heard designers questioning most this year, and resources I recommend for each theme. 1. Gaining confidence as a designer. How do you gain confidence so you can interview well and convince stakeholders of direction? Great blog post on the subject here: https://lnkd.in/gnHD7C4c 2. Confidence continued. It comes down to being confident in who you are and your ability to be curious. Confidence is not about being "right"! Great resource on the subject is James Victore's book Feck Perfuction. https://amzn.to/3e6R34g 3. Building and scaling a design team. How do design teams scale from one to hundreds? I believe there's no better answer than this book by Kristin Skinner and Peter Merholz, called Org Design for Design Orgs. https://amzn.to/3mzSL39 4. What skills product designers need. Looking to move into UX/UI/product design and not sure where to start? Or already in design but unsure how to grow? Explore design skills frameworks from companies like BuzzFeed, GitLab, Intercom, and more from https://lnkd.in/gBCMGSgR 5. Presenting designs and case studies effectively. When it comes to presentations specifically, I always recommend researching the advice from Seth Godin on how to make a compelling presentation. Starting here: https://lnkd.in/gTDVHxjG 6. How to put together a case study. Look no further than this wisdom from Tobias van Schneider on the subject: https://lnkd.in/gSFF9jvs 7. Speaking and writing more effectively. Two books I recommend for everyone to read on the topic of effective communication: Simply Said by Jay Sullivan (https://amzn.to/3p7kfOU) and Difficult Conversations by Douglas Stone et al. (https://amzn.to/3J19Jkv) 8. How to negotiate or have constructive disagreement. Continuing the recommendations of books, my go-to book on the subject of disagreement is Buster Benson's Why Are We Yelling? https://amzn.to/3sneWNk 9. Finally, identifying and nurturing individual strengths. Look no further than the value of developing self awareness. This talk by Jasmine Friedl is something I've recommended more times this year than I can count! https://lnkd.in/gjYsWXd4 #design #productdesign

Sharing with my design org internally as a virtual holiday gift. Also pulling some of these I haven't read for myself and as physical gifts for folks in my circle. Thanks for always doing the work to share great design and leadership knowledge, Tanner Christensen! Grateful to have you in my life. 🙏
