Collaborating with the Dept. of Government Operations and the Center for Public Sector AI where I serve on the board alongside Justin Brown, we've initiated a pilot program to harness the power of AI. With a focus on enhancing services, boosting efficiencies, and elevating outcomes for our constituents, we're delving into 14 test cases. These include streamlining licensing processes, revamping policies and rules, enhancing legislative reports' clarity, and refining staff training materials for top-notch customer service. By optimizing our operations, we're not just reducing administrative burdens but also expanding our capacity to serve the public effectively. Our commitment to fostering a seamless, customer-centric system demands innovation and a proactive approach to technological advancements. I read a recent AP article that there are 8 billion humans on the planet. I got curious. How much time does a population spends on daily activities? I built a GenAI tool to help me. Here's a visualization that is based on data for the United States' population of 345 million. (These are hours per day!) Key Takeaways: 💡 Sleeping and Working dominate the daily schedule, each accounting for approximately 24% of total hours. 💡 Activities like socializing, commuting, and using technology also consume a significant portion of the day. 💡 Even smaller activities like shopping, exercising, and hygiene collectively add up to billions of hours daily! Why Does This Matter? Understanding how populations spend their time can help in: 💡 Policy-making: Prioritizing resources for public health, infrastructure, and leisure. 💡 Business Strategy: Tailoring products and services to meet real-life demands. 💡 Personal Reflection: Encouraging us to think critically about how we use our own time. Thank you to Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems for the opportunity to participate in the annual conference and share the AI governance work we are doing at The University of Vermont Health Network and to my co-panelists Rick Hildebrant, Kathleen McGraw MD, FHM, CPE, Josh Bongard and moderator John Cohn. For those who have never met John Cohn, he is an absolute gem of a "mad scientist" and a wonderful human. I hope our paths continue to cross! This conference and the focus on how to leverage #AI in #healthcare is critical as Vermont contends with aging demographics, cost pressures and human resource gaps. The recent release of Act 167 report by Oliver Wyman, argues that Vermont must act to re-examine how we provide healthcare to our friends and neighbors. Vermont is the canary in the coal mine of rural aging demographics and the resulting impacts to healthcare delivery and finances across the US. This ideally would spark a national conversation, strategy and solution but, we cannot wait. What is clear, is that #HealthIT and #Informatics is a critical component of increasing access, efficiency and quality. We must invest and move rapidly to adopt new technologies, share data and where possible, systems to begin to climb an efficiency curve.
