Mini-horse makes therapy visits just like a dog
MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) - You've probably heard of a therapy dog that provides comfort to people living in nursing homes or physical rehab facilities. But most people have never heard of a tiny horse that does the same thing.
Kay and John Daughtry decided to get a mini-horse six years ago. Brandy was the sweet mini that they chose, and they knew right away she'd be perfect as a therapy horse.
"We love being around the people, particularly the kids at Ronald McDonald House. It's just fun to see people smile," Kay said.
Monday morning, Brandy hopped out of her transport van and put on a pair of sparkling pink shoes so her hoofs wouldn't damage the tile floor of Carrington Place Rehabilitation and Living Center.
The oooh's and aaah's start just as soon as she walks in the door.
"When you're in here all the time and then they come in with something like Brandy, it means a lot," said Rita Estridge, who lives at Carrington with her husband Calvin.
Brandy goes from room to room and person to person allowing enough time for each person to get a good pet and a hug. For some people, the sight and feel of a horse brings back memories from childhood. It even brings some people to tears.
"There's just something magical about a horse," Kay said.
And if you watch Brandy, there's no doubt, the magic is real.
