My Top 2013 Film Podcasts

Since it’s the new year, and having run this website for some significant chunk of 2013, I think I’m contractually obligated to do some sort of year-in-review post. Since it would be kind of stupid to do the Top Photos I Reblogged on Tumblr, let’s take a look at my favorite movie podcasts.

The Projection Booth

These guys are amazing. They take a look at old movies, some popular, some crazy obscure (and a lot of exploitation and horror that you’ve probably never heard of), and dig deep until they’ve uncovered every morsel they can find about the making and meaning of the film. The A.V. Club has called them “pharmaceutical-grade film geekery,” and that’s no lie. I want to be like them when I grow up.

Filmspotting

I suppose they’re all popular and trendy now, and y'know, actually on the radio and all, but I’ve been listening to these guys for my current release and “Top 5 List” fix since they were called Cinecast, and that was three co-hosts ago. Sometime I’ll slack off for a few weeks when they get a little too high-falutin’ film reviewery, but since Matty Ballgame left, it’s been a lot more even-keeled. Sorry, Matty.

Scriptnotes

Two screenwriters talk about writing, making movies, and the nitty-gritty details of being a working screenwriter in Hollywood. Even if you aren’t a screenwriter, it’s a fascinating look at the business of moviemaking.

James Bonding

I actually only found out about this when some jerk on the podcasters panel at Rose City Comic Con dissed it as something that nobody wanted to hear, and a recommendation of what not to do. He couldn’t have been more wrong. Funny people chatting about James Bond movies is something that’s exactly up my alley.

Post Atomic Horror

I’m biased. My good friend Ron “AAlgar” Watt is one of the hosts, and they don’t talk about movies all the time, but in 2013, they definitely talked about all four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies, as well as Star Trek Into Darkness, so it totally counts. Never you mind that I personally appeared on the episode where they talked about Star Trek: Nemesis – they were all great, even the ones that didn’t guest-star yours truly.

So, what movie podcasts should I try out in the new year?
