News And Updates :: SUMMER FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE

Although summer's long, hot days often herald a slow down of activity and leisure time spent lounging at the pool, away on family vacations, or enjoying backyard cookouts — that's not the case for OA+D. We've all been hard at work saving collections, scanning materials, and preparing for a slate of important special publications to be released later in the year.

One of the most exciting publications we're set to release later this year will be a landmark event. Frank Lloyd Wright's Two Jacobs Houses: Experiments in Modern Living is edited by Wright scholar and noted author, Neil Levine, and features essay contributions by all three Jacobs children (Susan, Elizabeth, and William) as well as new essays by Levine and Michael Desmond. Additionally there will be new biographies of Katherine and Herb Jacobs, as well as scores of never-before-published photographs and drawings of both Jacobs Houses. It's set to be the definitive publication on the history and experience of living in these icons of American architecture.

But all of this exciting work requires significant support. OA+D is an all-volunteer organization and the efforts we undertake to preserve and publish on the materials in the Archives takes financial help from you!

With that said we're launching a summer campaign to raise $10,000 that will go towards our ongoing organizational needs, such as archival supplies, cataloging efforts, publishing costs, and more.

Make a tax-deductible donation of $100, $250, $500, $1000 or more at our website during our summer campaign and if we are successful in raising our $10,000 goal (or more) you'll be on the list to receive one of the first copies of the new Jacobs Houses books when it's published before anyone else as a special thank you!

So follow the link here to make that generous donation and help us make this summer a successful one!

From The Archives

OA+D is pleased to announce that we have recently been honored to have the remaining collection of materials from Kamal Amin donated to the Archives.

Kamal came to the United States from Cairo, Egypt and studied under Frank Lloyd Wright from 1951-1959. He then went on to be an integral part of the Taliesin Associated Architects for the next 17 years before venturing out to establish his own architectural practice and endeavors as an accomplished artist, designer, and author.

The Kamal Amin Collection, which contains hundreds of slides, photos, letters, ephemera, books, textiles, and more will be organized, cataloged, and digitized to allow future research of his life and work, as well as a long overdue publication on his architectural work.

If you'd like to support this effort — or if you have additional materials that would find a good home with Kamal's papers that you're interested in donating to be preserved — please let us know by contacting us at info@oadarchives.org.

It's Time To Renew!

Over the last 10 years the OA+D Archives has been publishing the Journal of Organic Architecture + Design, a scholarly (but accessible) publication dedicated to bringing new insights and little known aspects of the organic movement to light.

For those of you who have taken the journey with us and been subscribers, we hope you've enjoyed receiving each issue of the journal. We try very hard to bring you compelling stories and never-before-seen materials in each issue—which takes a lot of time, energy, and not least of all resources.

Because we rely on your financial support to keep producing the journal, we thought this might be the perfect opportunity to encourage anyone who has not already done so to renew their 3-issue annual subscription. Or, become a brand new subscriber for the first time!

This fall and winter will see two more exciting issues published that are already well under development and will continue our legacy of important architectural discoveries and advocacy. December's issue will be an especially notable one by Kathryn Smith on Frank Lloyd Wright's Walker House in Carmel-by-the-sea.

If you believe in the work we are undertaking to preserve organic architectural materials and make their important histories and stories available to the public, then please follow the link to become a subscriber online here and thank you again for everyone's generous and ongoing support!
