I linked to this weekly round up of what's been happening in the Swift open source project a few weeks ago when it first launched and Jesse Squires has been continuing to do a fantastic job of summarising the progress each week. This week he launched a new, dedicated site to post these updates on. You should go and subscribe! 🚀
As you're probably aware, I'm not trying to cover everything that's going on in terms of Swift language development here on iOS Dev Weekly. Of course, I still post stuff that interests me but if you're looking for detailed coverage of all the changes, this is your occasional reminder that Jesse Squires is still doing a great job with his Swift Weekly Brief. You should be subscribed.
I was a huge fan of the Swift Weekly Brief before it unfortunately went on hiatus at the end of 2017. What I didn't realise was that it only took a very short break before it was back up and running! I somehow managed to get removed from the mailing list during the transition and so I had no idea it had been back for almost a year! I've always been a big fan of this project as it provides in-depth coverage of Swift evolution, so it fits really well alongside iOS Dev Weekly because my interests sit much more with iOS development rather than language development.
So, just in case you had also missed that the hiatus was very brief, it's now being run by Bas Broek who continues to do a fantastic job covering the Swift open source projects. If you're not already subscribed, go sign up.
Open Source Swift - Weekly Brief
Jesse Squires is starting a weekly round up of what's been happening with the Swift open source project. Looking at things like notable pull requests, proposals and other updates from the repositories and mailing lists. There's so much activity at the moment that this is certainly needed.
The end of The Swift Weekly Brief?
Sad news this week as Kristaps Grinbergs announced he was stepping down from the Swift Weekly Brief. I've been a big fan for as long as it's been around, and it'd be a terrible shame if this valuable resource did finally end. Want to help? Reach out to Kristaps on Twitter if you'd be interested in keeping it going.
The future of the Swift Weekly Brief
The Swift Weekly Brief has been a fantastic resource for many years now, and one thing I love about it is that it's not just dependent on one person producing it. In this post, Bas announces that he is stepping down and that the brief will no longer arrive by email. However, it will continue! If you're not yet reading it - and I don't know how that's possible, it's the perfect complement to this newsletter. You should subscribe via RSS now that the email is gone.
I want to say a huge thank you to Bas, and everyone who has contributed to the brief over the years, and an even bigger one to Kristaps Grinbergs who will continue writing it.
I was sad to see the Swift Weekly Brief go back on hiatus at the end of last year (I'm refusing to say it's dead, as I still hope someone will continue it). This new newsletter from Cihat Gündüz might fill the gap, though! It also covers news from Swift Evolution and the Swift open-source project and goes into even more depth than the Weekly Brief did! It may even be a little too long. 😅 This is Issue 1, so you should subscribe!
Last week, Jesse Squires' announced that he would be sunsetting the Swift Weekly Brief for good (unless someone was willing to take over). Sadly, it seems another great Swift newsletter has also come to an end. A few days ago, Natasha announced that This Week in Swift would be no more. 😔
So, for those of you wondering if iOS Dev Weekly is next? Rest assured that we're not going anywhere. In fact, we're more excited than ever to try new things as we continue to grow and improve our newsletter.
