RIGHT IN THE HEART OF KANSAS CITY JUST SOLD AT AUCTION. KRIS: THE SONDERN-ADLER HOUSE IS ONE OF A FEW HUNDRED ACROSS THE COUNTRY DESIGNED BY THE FAMOUS ARCHITECT. KMBC 9’S KELLY ECKERMAN GOT A LAST LOOK INSIDE BEFORE IT SOLD TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER. REPORTER: I HAVE TO SAY, IT IS FASCINATING TO SEE THE HOME IN PERSON, SO OFTEN DESCRIBED AS A PRICELESS WORK OF ART. IT’S NESTLED IN THE HISTORIC ROANOKE NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR THE PLAZA. IT WAS BUILT IN 1939, JUST 900 SQUARE FEET THEN. WRIGHT LATER DESIGNED AN ADDITION THAT TRIPLED IT IN SIZE. HIS STYLE IS UNMISTAKABLE. NATURAL MATERIALS. HORIZONTAL LINES. AND SEAMLESS TRANSITIONS FROM INDOORS TO OUTDOORS. HE ALSO LIKED TO INCORPORATE DRAMATIC CHANGES FROM ROOM TO ROOM. >> DINING AND SLEEPING, HE WANTED TO BE MORE INTIMATE SPACES. HE WOULD DROP THE CEILING DOWN IN THOSE SPACES. THE PUBLIC SPACES WOULD GET CAUGHT -- WOULD GET TALLER AND MORE EXPENSIVE. A Frank Lloyd Wright home in the heart of Kansas City just sold at auction.The Sondern-Adler House is one of a few hundred across the country designed by the famous architect. And KMBC 9 got a last look inside before it sold for nearly $1 million Monday afternoon to a bidder from Nebraska.In 1939, Wright designed a 900-square foot home for Clarence Sondern in the Roanoke neighborhood of Kansas City. Three squares connected the two wings of the L-shaped home with a workspace, laundry and heater room and bathroom. There were two bedrooms, both with glass doors and openings to the terrace.Nine years later, Arnold Adler, the second owner of the home, once again called upon Wright to design the addition to the home that would add on more than 2,000 square feet, which included another bedroom, additional bathrooms, additional living spaces and a carport.Lloyd Wright’s vision was the beginning of the ranch-style home, and the Sondern-Adler House is one of two of his homes in the Kansas City area.The home had been on the market for 11 months at $1.65 million.
