Platinum Games Wants To Self-Publish Bayonetta

Speaking during an interview with IGN Japan, Platinum Games’ Atsushi Inaba revealed that the company is interested in self-publishing titles in the Bayonetta franchise. In theory, this could mean the likes of Bayonetta 3 could come to PlayStation 5 down the line, but absolutely nothing is in the pipeline yet.

Platinum Games Interested In Self-Publishing

Inaba-san revealed that this is simply a desire that the company has, and not to be taken as confirmation that it’s even possible at this point.

He added that Nintendo and SEGA currently own half of the IP rights each to the Bayonetta franchise, and if Platinum were to pursue crowdfunding to self-publish the brand, it would require considerably more funding than its recent Kickstarter-funded The Wonderful 101: Remastered.

The Bayonetta franchise first launched back in 2010 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, although Bayonetta 2 was released exclusively for the Wii U in 2014 and Bayonetta 3 is currently in production as a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

Bayonetta PS5 possible? It is if Platinum self-publishes!

February 18 will mark the release of a remastered Bayonetta and Vanquish for PS4 and Xbox One to celebrate their 10th anniversary.

Platinum Games was formed back in 2007 as a result of the merge between Seeds Inc. and Odd Inc., which were founded by Capcom veterans such as Shinji Mikami, Hideki Kamiya, and Tatsuya Minami. The studio worked on the likes of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Star Fox Zero, and Nier: Automata among its own IPs.

Here’s the blurb on Bayonetta if you’re not up to speed:

From PlatinumGames’ legendary director Hideki Kamiya of Resident Evil and Devil May Cry fame, SEGA brings one of the most universally acclaimed character action games of all time to PC.

Bayonetta. The last survivor of an ancient witch clan who keep the balance between light, dark and chaos. Entombed to protect herself – and the world as we know it – Bayonetta is discovered and revived after 500 years, sparking a chain of events with cataclysmic repercussions.

Thrust straight into battle, with only one clue to her past, Bayonetta must discover the truth and fight for the future. Her daunting conquest sees her face off against countless angelic enemies and giant foes in a game of 100% pure action.
