Comparing Drupal, Symfony, and Craft CMS Frameworks

With so many options available out there, it can be confusing to choose the right CMS for your business. When a client came to us with a recommendation from their design partner to build their solution in CraftCMS, we had to pause for a moment. Would CraftCMS be robust enough for their needs? Would it allow for growth and future proofing that they wanted? We took it upon ourselves to assess the strengths and capabilities of three notable CMS frameworks to help our client in their decision making.

Drupal or Symfony are both open source software platforms, while Craft CMS is a proprietary software solution. Open source solutions offer freedom from vendor lock-in, rapid innovation, and reduced costs, along with higher platform versatility, customization, and access to global communities of dedicated developers.

Drupal is the most robust open-source CMS available. Sites leverage Drupal’s exibility and freedom from vendor lock-in to build sites for local retailers to Fortune 100 companies. Compared to proprietary CMS solutions, Drupal’s main advantages center around its lack of licensing cost and a global support community.

Another framework to consider is Symfony, who's strong suites include customization, integration with outside services, extensibility, and performance. Symfony would be another platform that leverages free and open source solutions that are vetted and supported by a large community of dedicated developers.

Metal Toad prides itself on finding the perfect solution for its clients, and while CraftCMS is both effective and user- friendly for certain cases, we believe that enterprise clients looking for a large scalable CMS would be better suited to Drupal or Symfony’s wide range of customization and capabilities. This in no way is throwing shade to CraftCMS, but matching the right CMS to the clients needs.
