On June 6, the city passed a resolution asking the minister for the authorization to abolish its municipal police force and to be served by the SQ. The city made the request because it felt its existing police force had become a financial burden.
According to the minister, the next step in the process will be to form a committee to make decisions regarding the reclassification of each of the police officers involved and to agree on the date on which the SQ will begin serving Thetford Mines.
