Gogo is pressing forward with its updated network rollout, now confirming plans to cover Canadian markets with the improved service. The company expects its Gogo 5G network will complete its northern expansion next year.
Building on our nationwide network in the contiguous United States, expanding into Canada will allow our customers to realize enhanced inflight connectivity in more destinations and routes where they fly. – Sergio Aguirre, Gogo’s president and chief operating officer.
The Gogo 5G platform aims to deliver 25 Mbps performance to aircraft, with peak speeds near triple that. It also promises the low latency typical of a terrestrial network and comparable speeds getting data off the aircraft.
It also faces a legal challenge from SmartSky claiming the Gogo 5G solution infringes on multiple patents. While Gogo won an early ruling related to a preliminary injunction the case itself continues to work its way through the judicial process.
Gogo 5G is built atop Gogo’s AVANCE solution. The AVANCE platform allows connectivity with the existing ATG network today and supports multi-bearer services, an easy upgrade path to Gogo 5G and Gogo’s global Low Earth Orbit (LEO) solution in the future. The LEO program aims to take flight in 2024 as well.
Following the successful critical design review of the 5G chip earlier this year, Gogo 5G service is expected to launch commercially in the fourth quarter of 2023, with completion of the network expansion into Canada in 2024.
