šI hear folks say āAI canāt be creativeā butā¦ ChatGPT-4 generated more, cheaper & better business ideas than folks in an innovation class that has generated many successful startups. āMore important, the vast majority of the best ideas in the pooled sample are generated by ChatGPT and not by the studentsā https://lnkd.in/e-rHurpV
Forget being creative, many people still donāt think AI can create original ideas š
So what you are saying is that you have a way to evaluate creativity numerically and that is the metric you used to validate your creativity model? Because if that is true, then the results belong to a psychology or medicine journal. But I don't think the reviewers here, or the authors (all business school) are qualified to evaluate creativity, and of course the journal is not specializing in that either. So, without even reading the paper, by what it claims in its title alone, and the qualifications of both the journal and the authors to talk, not to mention evaluate, creativity, I call this junk science. š
Ideas have always been a dime a dozen. This is nothing new. Ask any VC. Execution is the key value generator. Can AI execute?
The ācreativityā of ChatGPT is relative with respect to the training data it has seen. Itās creativity is only defined by novelty and usefulness. But there are few other criteria for something thatās creative. Itās novelty is also relative. Itās novel because it happens to be outside the limited experience of some individual.
We say that AI cannot be ācreativeā, because it cannot, by definition. Itās just recombining data from its training set. It literally cannot create components that it has never seen. If you can find a measure of creativity that somehow measures the output of AI to be anything other than nonzero, then youāve redefined the word to suit the purpose. Junk science.
The lesson here then, if itās not that AI is creative, is just how not creative some humans are too. We can tout our creativity all we want but we better spark it, train it, unleash it, and celebrate it early and often or elseā¦
Ideas are a dime a dozen as per the title. But we all know execution is what matters. Iām interested to know how idea novelty is assessed
Directly quoting the paper: "the mean novelty of the human-generated ideas is higher than that of the LLM-generated ideas (p<0.001)."
A common rebuttal I hear is that ārandomness of outcomes gives the appearance of creativityā, but then many of my artist friends find creative pivots in random errors they make.
