Benefits analysis of the status quo? People, organisations, industries, cultures, even entire nations, get entrenched in believing that the status quo is the way things should be for ever. The Spartans were the greatest power in their world for eight centuries, but they are a perfect example of that sort of belief, and the refusal to change. They fell. They're a historical footnote. They no longer exist. Sticking with the way things are just because that's the way things have been is not a valid thought process if you want yourself, your organisation, your industry, your culture, or your country, to survive. It is necessary to conduct a benefits analysis now and then. Figure out where you want to go in the future, and how you're going to get there. If the risks associated with the way things are now are a threat to where you want to be in the future, then you need to mitigate or remove those risks. You need to change the way things are now, in order to create the desired future.
