THUNDER BAY — The public can now view the status of the numerous recommendations meant to improve policing and police oversight in Thunder Bay.

The Thunder Bay Police Services Board launched a new portal on its website that provides up-to-date information on the work being done on the more than 100 recommendations.

The recommendations come from the Office of the Independent Police Review Director’s Broken Trust Report, Senator Murray Sinclair’s report on behalf of the Ontario Civilian Police Commission, the Seven Youth Inquest, and the recently convened expert panel.

The police services board said providing updated information on the status of implementing recommendations is part of its plan to increase transparency.

“It is important to show the work being done by members of the Board and its working groups to ensure the recommendations are in place,” said Thunder Bay Police Services Board chair Karen Machado.

“Ensuring this process is a transparent one is critical as the working groups members move forward in their work.”

The recommendations are divided into three working groups, which were created last year to review all the recommendations and identify priorities.

The report from the expert panel emphasized the need for greater transparency and communication by the police services board.

Sinclair’s report also recommended the creation of a website for the police services board, which underwent a significant redesign late last year.

“Transparency and ensuring the work is implemented in a meaningful way is how we will build back trust,” Machado said.

The update on recommendations can be found on the Thunder Bay Police Services Board website.
