Achieving #DigitalMaturity: 5 Key Practices MIT and Deloitte’s1 third annual study of #digitalbusiness reveals five key practices of companies that are developing into more mature digital organizations. Their approaches, which may offer valuable lessons for companies that want to improve their own digital efforts, include: 1. Implementing systemic changes in how they organize and develop workforces, spur workplace #innovation, and cultivate digitally minded cultures and experiences. For example, more than 70% of respondents from digitally maturing companies say their organizations are increasingly organized around crossfunctional teams versus only 28% of companies at early stages of digital development. 2. Playing the long game. Their strategic planning horizons are consistently longer than those of less digitally mature organizations, with nearly 30% looking out five years or more versus only 13% for the least digitally mature organizations. Their digital strategies focus on both technology and core business capabilities. 3. Scaling small digital experiments into enterprise-wide initiatives that have business impact. At digitally maturing entities, small “i” innovations or experiments typically lead to more big “I” innovations than at other organizations. Digitally maturing organizations are more than twice as likely as companies at the early stages of digital development to drive both small, iterative experiments and enterprisewide initiatives rather than mainly experiments. Digitally maturing organizations also can be shrewd and disciplined in figuring out how to fund these endeavors and keep them from languishing in the face of more immediate investment needs. 4. Becoming talent magnets. Employees and executives are highly inclined to jump ship if they feel they don’t have opportunities to develop #digitalskills. For example, VP level executives without sufficient digital opportunities are 15 times more likely to want to leave within a year than are those with satisfying digital challenges. Digitally maturing organizations typically understand the need for and place a premium on attracting and developing digital talent. Their development efforts often go far beyond traditional training. These businesses create compelling environments for achieving career growth ambitions. 5. Securing leaders with the vision necessary to lead a digital strategy, and a willingness to commit resources to achieve this vision. These leaders are more likely to have articulated a compelling ambition for what their digital businesses can be and define digital initiatives as core components to achieving their business strategy. A larger percentage of digitally maturing companies are also planning to increase their digital investment compared to their less digitally mature counterparts, which threatens to widen an already large gap in the level of digital success. #TransformPartner – Your #DigitalTransformation Consultancy

2 – AI-defined Competitive Landscape Rapid AI technology evolution leads to Competitive Landscape revolution. With AI penetrating all areas of value creation, competitive rules are being rewritten. Productivity Frontier is a good way to illustrate the change. Original concept by Michael Porter is here modified slightly to fit better to AI-driven push for improved productivity, see diagram below. Productivity equals created value divided by needed effort. Consequently, path to AI-driven productivity gain is dualistic: numerator and denominator are impacted at the same time. Higher value and better customer experience achieved with smaller effort. This is not to say that AI would be the sole factor behind productivity. However, AI has become the single biggest driver for productivity gains. In the diagram, the two industry Leaders push Productivity Frontier by deploying cutting-edge AI use cases designed as strong portfolio with synergies and mutual reinforcement. Having crossed the threshold of Competitive Advantage, they enjoy good pricing power combined with low cost operations – leading to healthy margins and growth. Over time, they maintain their relative position through continuous AI use case discovery and by mastering AI use case integration. In short, excellence in digital innovation allows them to stay at the top. The three Followers operate in the neighbourhood of CA Threshold. Their innovative power with AI use case discovery and integration capabilities is not enough to move the frontier itself but it is enough to keep up. Compared to Leaders, their pricing power is not on the same level and their operational efficiency falls slightly behind. Overall, Follower strategy is viable provided that the gap stays small enough. The two Laggards are struggling to cross the threshold of Basic Competitive Requirements. Not having CAs is not a big problem. Not having BCRs is. Company without BCRs lacks table stakes to the game. Laggard indicated with red color faces existential risk due to not meeting minimum level of customer expectation and/or suffering from unsustainable cost structure. Again, it is highly likely that there are other factors in play but the role of AI is nevertheless increasing fast. Disruption caused by technological advancement causes even the mightiest to fall. The Age of AI is here. Don’t become the next Kodak. Conclusions: - Innovative and properly integrated AI use cases lead to higher value, better experience and enhanced operational efficiency. - Growth, healthy margins and risk mitigation build on strong AI use case portfolio. - Falling too far behind industry-specific Productivity Frontier creates existential risk. This is the second post in article series on AI Transformation. Stay tuned for AI use case discovery and integration discussed in upcoming articles. #AITransformation #TransformPartner - Your #DigitalTransformation Consultancy
