There's a natural evolution of a podcast that goes from building an audience to generating revenue. Unfortunately, most podcasts never get to a revenue-generating stage, because they either: 1. Get shut down before that ever happens, or 2. Get caught up in vanity metrics and forget the end goal Lindsay Tjepkema calls this evolution the Amplified Marketing Maturity Curve and it happens in 5 stages: Stage 1: The Idea This is the phase where you have that unique idea that you want to turn into a podcast and actually get an episode out. Stage 2: Structure You've gotten past the first few episodes and now you've achieved a regular cadence and a defined target audience. Stage 3: Building the Audience This is where a lot of companies get stuck. You're building out that audience and that is a must-do. But, if you're building a podcast on behalf of a brand, it doesn't matter how many millions of listens you get. If those listens aren't generating dollars for the business, it's not working. Stage 4: Building the Brand You've started your podcast. You're building the audience. Stage four is where you tie those efforts into building out a full content strategy to build your brand. This is where companies squeeze out every ounce of value and distribute across multiple channels. Stage 5: Revenue You've built an audience. You've linked the show back to your brand and are effectively distributing content. The final stage is measuring the business impact. Are people coming inbound because they listened to your podcast? Are others referring you based on listening? Stages four and five are the most important but are also the ones that often get overlooked. We get stuck in audience-building mode but never step back to think about how we can leverage that audience and the content to its maximum potential.
