Red Deer city council adopts 2024-2026 Annual Policing Plan priorities

Apr 3, 2024 | 10:46 AM

Red Deer RCMP presented their 2024-2026 Annual Policing Plan (APP) on Monday, outlining the community’s top priorities.

City council formally adopted the plan, developed jointly by the RCMP and the City, at their meeting.

The 2024-2026 top three priorities for Red Deer, include:

1. Intelligence-led Response

2. Police Visibility and Public Safety

3. Community Engagement and Partnerships.

Each priority identifies specific goals and areas of focus for police.

“These priorities underscore the Red Deer RCMP’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. By implementing intelligence-led strategies, enhancing police visibility, and fostering community partnerships, I’m confident the RCMP can continue to create a safer and more resilient community for all residents,” said Mayor Ken Johnston.

The City says they worked with RCMP over the past few months to develop the plan through public consultations, focus groups, and a public survey, gathering input from the community about their experiences and feelings of safety. They add the information was analyzed and combined with local crime data and trends to inform policing priorities.

Within the Intelligence-led Police Response goal, the RCMP said they are working on a new program in conjunction with Alberta Health Services to pair two RCMP members with two paramedics for the Virtual Opioid Dependency Program.

“It’s important that our priorities reflect what we heard from the community. We focused on understanding the issues that are of greatest importance to Red Deerians and tackling them with made-in-Red Deer strategies and solutions,” said Superintendent Holly Glassford, Officer in Charge for the Red Deer RCMP. “We then layered in crime data and intelligence, and turned that into strategic, comprehensive policing priorities that reflect the crime and community safety needs of Red Deer.”

Officials say the priorities will aim to address issues like street-level drug trafficking and use, persons and property crime, enhancing trail and road safety, increasing strategic relationships with criminal justice partners, and continuing to connect with the community to ensure resiliency.

The 2022-2024 APP priorities were Police Response and Visibility, Crime Reduction, and Engaging Community Members.
