In an Internet Minute, Way Too Much is Happening All the Time

The numbers of internet searches, posts, messages, uploads, and dollars spent that take place every sixty seconds are utterly, ludicrously staggering.

Wonder why you're having a hard time concentrating when you go online? Obviously, there's a lot to do, but it seems that everyone is doing all of those things, all the time. The evidence can be found in the Data Never Sleeps chart for 2021—the 9th edition from Domo.

The data points in this year's chart are generally different from the 2020 categories, but a few are the same as those in the pre-COVID 2019 chart. Those show some major gains. For example, Instagram users went from posting 55,140 photos per minute two years ago to 65,000 per minute this year. Google went from 4.5 million searches per minute in 2019 to 5.7 million per minute currently.

One data point included last year and this year is the number of times Microsoft Teams users connected: In 2020, it was 52,083 per minute, but it's 100,000 per minute this year. We can thank remote work for that.

Not all the numbers increased. For example, Netflix users went from streaming 694,444 hrs of video per minute in 2019 to 452,000 hours per minute in 2021. (This seems odd to me, considering how often I re-watch Lost in Space.)

Here's the full chart for 2021, including a look at the population of internet users in total, which is currently at 5.2 billion people.
