Brad Justinen and Shane McKown of Motion Sickness, interviewed on The Optical Episode 004, have now launched their Open Source Cinematic Motion Control Kickstarter campaign.

Over the past 3 years we’ve been busy working on the future of cinematic motion control (MoCo). Although motion control is nothing new, it has been a closely guarded Hollywood secret, that only the big studios with their deep pocket books could afford — that is until now. At Motion Sickness we’re designing a low cost, open-source MoCo Rig, made with off-the-shelf components that you can easily get on the internet.

They’re finalizing open-source plans for a 6-axis motion control camera rig, as well as building a MoCo community website at http://motionsick.org/. These guys are local here in Seattle — I saw their rig at the local Mini Maker Faire this year, and it’s quite impressive — but I think independent filmmakers and effects artists everywhere will benefit from funding this Kickstarter campaign.
