Ella Matthes, the publisher and editor of the iconic Lesbian News Magazine, also known as LN, passed away due to a heart attack on March 16, 2024, at the age of 81. Her death marks the end of an era for North America’s longest-running lesbian publication and a significant voice in the LGBTQ+ community.

From 1994 to 2022, Matthes was at the helm of Lesbian News Magazine. Under her leadership, LN expanded its influence and became a pivotal platform for lesbian voices across the nation. Founded in 1975 by Jinx Beer, the magazine started as a singular outlet for lesbian issues. It transformed significantly over the years, particularly under Matthes’ stewardship, into a comprehensive publication covering a vast range of topics relevant to lesbians of all ages, backgrounds and experiences.

Matthes’ editorial vision was clear: to inform, entertain, and serve women who love women, encompassing every age, economic class and color. She believed in creating a space where women from various walks of life could see themselves reflected in the stories and discussions within the magazine’s pages, and also learn to appreciate diverse viewpoints.

Matthes’ contributions to the LGBTQ+ community did not go unrecognized. She received numerous awards for her activism and community involvement.

Her dedication to supporting and increasing visibility for lesbians led her to take over Lesbian News Magazine in 1994, a move that significantly shaped her career and contributions to the community.

Matthes is mourned by her brother Carl Matthes and her wife of 26 years, Gladi Adams.

In memory of her remarkable life and contributions, donations can be made to the June Mazer Archives in West Hollywood, CA.
