For the past 3 years Dextro has been at the forefront of research in understanding not just the spatial aspects of video, but the temporal aspects as well. We have worked tirelessly to build a product that makes videos searchable and discoverable, driven by a mission to create the foundational video understanding infrastructure that any app, device, IoT camera, dataset, or robot can share.

We’ve come a long way since our founding. We’re proud to be the first company to analyze live streams in real-time and to combine visual, audio, and motion signals into a unified model for video analysis. We’ve solved hard engineering challenges in a short period of time, and in the process, we’ve built an incredibly talented team that embodies our mission on a daily basis. As a result, we’ve been able to ship products that solve real customer needs within two high-growth markets: media and public safety.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that our technology, product, and team will be joining Axon, bringing us one major step closer to delivering against our founding vision. When Rick and the Axon leadership team first came to visit our office, we were impressed with their vision that data can improve communities, which was closely aligned with ours. The acquisition is not only a natural fit culturally, but also technically. Our technology will serve as the foundation for Axon’s new suite of AI products and also bring state-of-the-art machine learning capabilities to an entire industry.

Law enforcement departments are generating a massive unique dataset of first-person video from body worn camera programs, and the vast majority of the data — 5.4 petabytes of it — is stored within the Axon ecosystem. Not many research teams gain access to this kind of data, let alone high-quality data specific to the depth of a particular domain. By joining forces, we’ll be able to apply and augment our existing infrastructure to analyze the largest repository of law enforcement footage in existence, directly increasing the transparency within and amongst communities. We strongly believe machine learning can have a significant positive impact on our society and are excited to continue our partnerships with the departments and their communities to train custom neural network architectures with a direct social impact.

Over the next 10 years, artificial intelligence will become ubiquitous. This acquisition ensures that the best solutions are brought to law enforcement and their communities, and will transform public safety for the better.

Thank you to all of our customers, investors, advisors, and most of all, our amazing team: You’ve made this possible, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without you!
