Every year, there seems to be an awards favorite not many lay people have seen. 2021’s been particularly rough in that regard, since many Oscar hopefuls have held off on on-demand releases, opting instead for Oscar-qualifying theatrical runs or limited streaming runs mid-pandemic.  Judas and the Black Messiah, for instance, was briefly unavailable after a 31-day run on HBO Max; The Father wasn't available until March 26. But before you resign yourself to being mostly confused during this year’s Academy Awards, know that nearly every nominated film now has streaming options. Call it good fortune, or a positive bi-product of widespread theater closures—but these are the Oscar-nominated movies readily available for you to screen at home right now.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Aaron Sorkin’s historical courtroom drama has earned six nominations, including best picture, original screenplay, cinematography, and best supporting actor for Sacha Baron Cohen. Stream the film, also featuring Eddie Redmayne, Jeremy Strong, Frank Langella, John Carroll Lynch, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, on Netflix.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

George C. Wolfe’s adaptation of August Wilson’s play features Viola Davis as the real-life music legend Ma Rainey and the late Chadwick Boseman as cornet player Levee. Both Davis and Boseman have earned nominations for their performances, with Boseman a favorite to win.

Promising Young Woman

Director Emerald Fennell’s rape-revenge-by-proxy film has secured several nominations, including best picture, best director, and best makeup and hairstyling. Star Carey Mulligan has also earned her second best actress nomination. Promising Young Woman is now available on VOD, DVD, and Blu-ray.

Mank

David Fincher’s Herman Mankiewicz/Citizen Kane biopic, co-written with his late father Jack, stars Gary Oldman as the eponymous heavy drinking screenwriter. Amanda Seyfried, playing movie star Marion Davies, is a standout, as is a painstakingly reproduced Hearst castle. You can stream the film, nominated in seven categories including best picture and best director, on Netflix.

Minari

Director Lee Isaac Chung, lead actor Steven Yeun, and supporting actress Youn Yuh-jung have all scored nominations for this moving tale of a Korean immigrant family’s budding life in 1980s Arkansas. You can rent or purchase the film on demand.

The United States v. Billie Holliday

Andra Day, starring as Billie Holliday at her most vulnerable, has scored her first Oscar nomination for Lee Daniel’s gritty biopic, which traces the controversy surround Holliday’s Strange Fruit as well as her heroin addiction. You can stream it on Hulu.

The Father

Oscar winner (Sir!) Anthony Hopkins delivers a showstopping performance as a man grappling with ever-worsening dementia. The illness has devastating consequences on the character’s relationship with his dutiful daughter, played by fellow Academy favorite Olivia Colman. The six-time nominated movie, directed by first-time filmmaker Florian Zeller, is now available on VOD, DVD, and Blu-ray.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

This film’s Oscar-nominated fate was sealed the moment “America’s mayor” Rudy Giuliani engaged in an “innocent sexytime encounter” with Maria Bakalova, the 24-year-old actress who plays Borat’s fictional 15-year-old daughter. The aforementioned scene shockingly blurred the lines between prank and political scandal. Sacha Baron Cohen’s “very nice” return to his infamous Kazakh journalist character earned three nods, and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Judas and the Black Messiah

Shaka King’s six-time Oscar-nominated film digs into one of the strangest slices of American history. Daniel Kaluuya plays Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton, fighting to keep his organization alive despite police interference and an orbit of enemies. One such foe is undercover FBI informant William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield), who infiltrated Hampton’s inner circle to tragic results for both men. After leaving HBO Max on March 14 as part of the Warner Bros. 31-day streaming clause for theatrical releases, the movie is now available to rent or purchase on demand.

Sound of Metal

For one of the strongest films of the year, actor Riz Ahmed got to know real members of the deaf community—many of whom are featured in the film—to play a heavy metal drummer and recovering addict who suddenly loses most of his hearing. You can stream the film, directed by Darius Marder and with a story by Marder and Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, on Amazon Prime Video.

Hillbilly Elegy

In what may be the most divisive Oscar nominee of the pack, Glenn Close and Amy Adams star as a strained mother and daughter duo living in rural Appalachia. Based on J.D. Vance’s memoir of the same name and directed by Ron Howard, the film has drawn ire for its reductive depiction of drug abuse and lack of context when it comes to systemic poverty. But Close could very well nab her first trophy, following seven (!) previous nominations, for her scenery-chewing portrayal of Mamaw. You can watch her transformation on Netflix.

Da 5 Bloods

Spike Lee’s high octane Vietnam-flashback film—starring (the unfortunately snubbed) Delroy Lindo, the late Chadwick Boseman, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis and Isiah Whitlock Jr. (plus past awards season breakout Jonathan Majors) and nominated for its score—is available to stream on Netflix. Rather than hiring younger actors or using de-aging technology for the flashback scenes, Lindo, Peters, Lewis, and Whitlock appear in the past as their present selves.

Another Round

If you’re looking to live vicariously before your vaccine dose(s), check out Danish director Thomas Vinterberg’s alcohol-soaked ode to living. Mads Mikkelsen gives one of his most compelling performances yet as a down-in-the-dumps high school teacher who teams up with three close friends to mimic the methodologies of some of history’s most powerful men. The film has earned a best international feature nomination and Vinterberg a best director nomination. It’s available to rent or purchase on demand.

Soul

If Pixar’s metaphysical story about a musician named Joe (voiced by Jamie Foxx) navigating the afterlife wins one of its three Oscar nominations, let it be announced by Tracy Morgan as “Sal.” Morgan’s Golden Globes pronunciation snafu aside, the film celebrates the way life often doesn’t go according to plan. In another example of this, the coronavirus pandemic led to Soul skipping theaters and debuting on Disney+, where it can be streamed now.

Mulan

Despite getting embroiled in political controversy and receiving a delayed release on Disney+, this live-action adaptation of the animated classic scored two Oscar nods. Nominated in both the costume design and visual effects categories, director Niki Caro transports viewers to China during the Han Dynasty, where the titular teen becomes a warrior to save her father. Newcomer Liu Yifei leads the film, which is available to rent, stream, or purchase.

The Mole Agent

If you prefer your documentaries with a side of intrigue, Maite Alberdi’s film about an 83-year-old man who poses as a spy in a nursing home is for you. While undercover, Sergio Chamy investigates whether abuses are occurring in the Chilean facility. The Mole Agent can be watched on Hulu, VOD, DVD, or Blu-ray.

News of the World

A stoic Tom Hanks heads West in his latest collaboration with director Paul Greengrass, with whom he worked previously on 2013’s Captain Phillips. This time, the pair tells a different kind of survival story—one where ideals like truth and human decency are at stake. Hanks plays Captain Jefferson Kidd, a newspaper-yielding Texan who performs for crowds across the frontier. His journey gets complicated, however, when he happens upon a lonely young girl (Helena Zengel), who joins his travels. Nominated in four categories, News of the World is available to stream, rent, or purchase.

Quo Vadis, Aida?

Writer-director Jasmila Zbanic sheds light on a tragic day in July 1995 where more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslims were killed by the Bosnian Serb Army. The film offers a stark depiction of the Bosnian war through the eyes of Aida, an interpertor at the UN base by Srebrenica. The film is available on VOD, DVD, and Blu-ray.

Pieces of a Woman

Vanessa Kirby’s Oscar-nominated portrayal of a woman navigating unimaginable loss feels eons away from her sly turn as Princess Margaret on The Crown. She stars alongside Ellen Burstyn, Shia LaBeouf, Succession’s Sarah Snook, and Benny Safdie in a devastating tale of a home-birth gone awry. The film is inspired by the personal experiences of Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó and his partner, writer Katá Weber. Pieces of a Woman is available to stream on Netflix.

One Night in Miami…

Oscar winner Regina King’s feature directorial debut, written by Kemp Powers, imagines a spirited conversation between four Black legends: Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke. Hamilton alum Leslie Odom Jr. scored two nominations—one for portraying Cooke and the other for penning the original song, “Speak Now” alongside Sam Ashworth. You can stream the film on Amazon Prime Video.

Wolfwalkers

The indie Irish animation studio, Cartoon Saloon has a perfect track record when it comes to getting its films Oscar nominations. Its latest offering is a mythical tale about a 17th-century English girl named Robyn Goodfellowe and her wolf hunter father as they wade their way through the greenery of Ireland. While there, the pair encounters a wolf girl, a discovery which raises obvious questions. Wolfwalkers is streaming exclusively on AppleTV+.

The White Tiger

Priyanka Chopra, who announced the 2021 Oscar nominations alongside husband Nick Jonas, stars in this Netflix thriller. Written and directed by Ramin Bahrani, the film is adapted from Aravind Adiga’s 2008 novel about an impoverished man’s ascension through India’s caste system. Chopra plays Pinky, a wealthy woman who helps Balram (Adarsh Gourav), on his journey to autonomy, which is available on Netflix.

Crip Camp

James Lebrecht and Nicole Newnham’s Netflix doc Crip Camp transports viewers to Camp Jened, a sanctuary of sorts for adolescents with disabilities that existed from the 1950s through the 1970s. In addition to providing refuge for a vulnerable community, the Catskills camp also helped inspire vital advocacy for its campers.

Tenet

One of the most major (and infamous) films to see its worldwide release rocked by COVID-19, Christopher Nolan’s totally comprehensible blockbuster scored two nominations. Recognized for production design and visual effects, Tenet starred John David Washington and Robert Pattinson in an odyssey about spies...we think. It also gifted the world with one of the more compelling Tom Cruise social media stunts in recent memory. Sorry, Nolan—the movie is available to stream, rent, or buy on whatever size screen you choose.

A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon

The latest in this stop-motion franchise about a pack of woolly creatures involves alien invasion on the Mossy Bottom Farm. A follow-up to 2015’s Oscar-nominated A Shaun the Sheep Movie, Farmageddon is streaming now on Netflix.

Greyhound

AppleTV+ is home to this World War II-era drama starring Tom Hanks and directed by Aaron Schneider from a script that Hanks wrote. The film’s exclusive streaming status wasn’t part of the initial release plan, but was facilitated by the coronavirus pandemic. “We made the movie for the theater. We wanted a bunch of people to sit in the dark and watch a big movie on a big screen with big sound,” Schneider told Vanity Fair. It appears that Academy voters still found appreciation for the film’s craft while watching at home, as it’s nominated in the sound category.

Pinocchio

More than two decades after Roberto Benigni’s Life Is Beautiful swept the Academy Awards, his latest project scored two nominations. More fascinating than the much-retold tale of a puppet yearning to be a real boy is the bizarre fact that this is Benigni’s third Pinocchio-related film. He plays Geppetto in this iteration, nearly 20 years after playing the title role in a 2002 directorial effort and voicing a character in 2011’s Pistachio—the Little Boy That Woodn’t. If you’re so inclined, the film is available to rent or purchase on demand.

Love and Monsters

The apocalyptic spectacle of this sci-fi flick, which stars Dylan O’Brien, landed this film a nomination for its visual effects. It tells the story of a world in which all remaining inhabitants must live underground for fear of unpredictable monsters residing above the surface. Love and Monsters is now available to stream, rent, or buy.

My Octopus Teacher

Amidst another year of standout documentaries, Pippa Ehrlich’s emotional portrait of nature photographer Craig Foster and his surprise bond with an eight-armed sea inhabitant. Ehrlich recalled receiving archive footage from Foster and immediately connecting to the material. “I just knew that it was a story I really wanted to make,” she said to Vanity Fair about the movie, which is available on Netflix.

The Life Ahead

It’s a family affair for Sophia Loren and her son, Edoardo Ponti, who directed Loren’s first film in nearly a decade. In The Life Ahead, Loren plays Madame Rosa, a Holocaust survivor living in Puglia, Italy and aiding children of prostitutes. Laura Pausini and Diane Warren’s original song “Io Sì,” is nominated, marking Warren’s twelfth nod in the category with no wins (yet). Watch The Life Ahead on Netflix.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

A Netflix movie about the popular European song competition starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as earnest Icelandic musicians is just as outlandish as it sounds. But it’s also whimsical, charming, and packed with songs that quickly worm their way into your head. One such track is the Oscar-nominated “Húsavik – My Hometown,” with music and lyrics by Savan Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus, and Rickard Göransson. You can stream the absurd musical for yourself on Netflix.

Over the Moon

Veteran Disney animator Glen Keane makes his feature directorial debut with this Chinese-American adventure, written by the late Audrey Wells. Inspired by the mythical moon goddess Chang’e, a 13-year-old girl named Fei Fei constructs a space bound rocket. Fei Fei decides to transport herself following her mother’s death and her father’s new relationship. It’s available on Netflix.

The One and Only Ivan

This fantastical tale of a gorilla named Ivan and elephant called Stella living in captivity was quietly released to Disney+ last August. But in addition to Oscar-nominated visual effects, the film boasts an A-list cast, including Angelina Jolie, Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren, Sam Rockwell, and Danny DeVito.

Onward

Chris Pratt and Tom Holland voice mythical elf brothers on an odyssey to reconnect with their late father in this Pixar feature. The film’s tearjerker status holds extra weight for director Dan Scanlon, who based Onward on his own lost familial connection. You can rent or purchase the movie, as well as stream it on Disney+.

Better Days

After sweeping the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards and grossing more than $220 million globally, this Chinese crime drama is nominated as one of the year’s best international features. This story of a bullied teen implicated in a murder, directed by Derek Tsang, is available to rent or buy.

The Midnight Sky

George Clooney stars as a wilting scientist who fears he may be the last man on Earth in his latest directorial effort. But Clooney may not be the planet’s only inhabitant for long. A team of astronauts, played by Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir, and David Oyelowo, are headed back to Earth after a long-term mission—with no idea what they’re returning to. The film, nominated in the visual effects category, is available on Netflix.

Time

Documentarian Garrett Bradley created a dazzling and heart-wrenching work of art by directly collaborating with her subjects, including prison abolitionist Fox Rich and her sons. Rich spent decades fighting to get her husband out of prison after he was handed a stunningly harsh sentence for a robbery they both committed in a moment of financial desperation. You can stream Time, nominated for best documentary feature, on Amazon Prime Video.

Nomadland

Currently a favorite to win best picture and possibly best director for rising star Chloe Zhao, you can stream this wistful Americana road movie starring Frances McDormand as an itinerant seasonal worker on Hulu.

Emma

If you loved Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, you’ll enjoy director Autumn de Wilde’s take on Jane Austen’s Emma, nominated for both costume design and makeup and hairstyling, with Taylor-Joy in the title role. De Wilde takes the flounciness of period dress and manner and turns it on its head. You can stream the comedy on HBO Max.

Collective

Director Alexander Nanau’s documentary following a team of investigators at Romanian newspaper Gazeta Sportilutor who crack open a story of government corruption following a devastating fire at a concert hall has received nominations for documentary (feature) and international feature film.  Anyone angered or worried by the state of the U.S. healthcare industry won’t be able to look away. You can rent or purchase the film on demand.

If Anything Happens I Love You

This animated short from directors Will McCormack and Michael Govier unpacks the way gun violence destroys communities, partnering with the organization Everytown for Gun Safety. The Netflix film demonstrates the heartache of two parents mourning the loss of their young daughter, who was killed in a school shooting.

Hunger Ward

In the latest short from Oscar-nominated documentarian Skye Fitzgerald, two female health care workers fight to feed the starving children of Yemen amidst the country’s civil war. Hunger Ward is streaming on Paramount Plus and Pluto TV.

Burrow

Leave it to Pixar to make even the most mundane of premises feel like an immersive adventure. This six-minute short from director Madeline Sharafian follows a rabbit as she assembles the perfect burrow; never mind that she doesn’t know what she’s doing and isn’t seeking help. You can stream Burrow exclusively on Disney+.

A Love Song for Latasha

Filmmaker Sophia Nahli Allison’s documentary short explores the life and ambitions of 15-year-old Latasha Harlins, who was shot in 1991 by convenience store owner Soon Ja Du during a trip to buy orange juice. Allison didn’t use footage of Harlin’s heartbreaking death, instead depicting the “beauty of what it means to grow up a young, Black girl in South Central,” the director told Vanity Fair. You can stream the film exclusively on Netflix.

The Letter Room

This live-action short, now streaming on Topic, was a collaboration for real-life couple Oscar Isaac and director Elvira Lind. Isaac stars as a corrections officer whose life changes when he’s transferred to a position in the prison’s letter room. While there, the character uncovers intimate correspondence written to an inmate on death row.

The Present

On the surface, filmmaker Farah Nabulsi’s live-action short merely depicts a familial shopping trip. On his wedding anniversary, Yusef enlists his daughter, Yasmine to help select the perfect gift for his wife. But this task proves daunting in the Israeli-occupied West Bank where the family resides. The Present, told in both Arabic and English, is available on Netflix.
