What does Community mean to you?

Alex Angel
Chief Community Officer@ Commsor

Community to me pretty much just means "home." It's a group of people where I feel totally comfortable and at ease and know that I can rely on the people in that group to support me, and that I in turn feel comfortable and confident in equally supporting them. I'm part of a bunch of different communities, both personally and professionally, in-person and virtual, and each of them feels that same way (though with unique twists to each).

community to me means especially as an only child, a place where I can be my unfettered self in a space without judgment or mockery. It’s safe, it’s warm and sometimes a bit sharp but only with humor. The best community is a space where I feel supported like a pillow.

Connecting amazing humans with common interests, goals, hopes, and dreams is what community is all about! I feel too lucky to get to work with amazing community builders every day that make these life-changing connections happen.

To me, community means elevating the collective. Whether that looks like elevating voices that wouldn't be heard otherwise or ensuring opportunities exist for everyone to contribute and succeed. The goal is to meet people where they are and allow them to contribute in ways that work for them to add to the success, well-being, and development of one another.

Community to me is a small corner of the internet or my city that truly feels like my own. It's a place I get to connect with other like minded people over something niche or important to me. Through this process of connection I often get to experience various resources and events that help to fuel my excitement for that group of people or particular topic.

Jephtah Abu asked me what community means to me and I thought about it a lot. And I kept coming back to the same answer. To me, community means this exact exchange. Community creates a way to connect with people across time zones, cultures, geographies, and shared interests, values, and goals. Without community, Jeph and I wouldn't be having this conversation with each other, nor with the multitude of other folks he's gotten answers from. Community shows that we all have something to share that teaches someone else, and that we all have something to learn from the person next to us, and that when we do that well, we are all better for it.
