As the cost of code generation goes down because AI can do it faster and less expensively than a human, the cost to benefit ratio of adopting agile/xp practices favors adopting them. We know that AI doesn’t generate the best code sometimes but using tests/types as a specification mechanism reduces the risk that the generated code doesn’t meet the requirements. Being agile is all about fast feedback loops so why slow down the process by forcing a human to validate the generated code afterwards to assure it meets the spec? Don’t like the code it generated? Write another test/type spec to guide the AI in the direction you want it to go. Code is too slow? Write a test to specify the behavior and let AI fix it. Found a security vulnerability? Write a test to reproduce it and let AI fix it. What is stopping your teams from using this flow to more effectively use AI to generate value generating code? Book "Learn Java with Projects" by Dr. Seán Kennedy and Maaike van Putten is really good piece of fun and technology, combined with agile dinosaur, probably T. Rex LTS 21 :) If you are starting with Java, that's good place to start, if you feel like you want to advance, Chapter 14 is where I am at and enjoying simple yet powerful examples of lambda expressions and next one, primitive streams, Can not wait to see more advanced topics like breakdown of code of Llama-3 java version, written using Vector API.

Is unit testing a waste of time? 🤔   In this thought-provoking talk, renowned software pioneer @James O. Coplien challenges agile dogmas, revealing how TDD and unit testing can harm rather than help.   Test Driven Development (TDD) was once a favorite in the agile community but has lost its appeal over the past five to ten years. Research shows it can be detrimental to software quality.   Yet, unit testing persists, likely because developers seek control, and the independence valued in agile methods.   In an object-oriented (OO) environment, unit testing is almost as problematic as TDD. Testing instance methods in OO environments is nonsensical. Moreover, unit testing increases system bugs and is less effective than system testing. I'm currently working with a small group of testers at a company here in the Netherlands to help them take their (and their company's) first steps into test automation. One of the first things I said to them, and one that I find myself repeating every day I work with them, is this one: "You're a software developer now" Why? Even though they're using a low-code tool for their automation efforts, software development is exactly what they're doing. Analyzing requirements. Designing their tests and the scaffolding underneath. Providing instructions to a computer to perform tasks. Testing their work (yes, tests need testing, too). It might not feel to them like they're doing software development, but that's _exactly_ why I keep repeating it to them. Because I want them to feel like that's what they're doing. The impact. The responsibilities. The fact that they're using the exact same tools that the developers at their company use. Are they still testers? Absolutely. But they're developers, now, too.
