What are all these App Store review times?

These are average review times, beta review times, and build processing times for iOS apps measured over the past two weeks, including time waiting in the queue to be reviewed and time the review actually takes. These averages are meant only as an interesting point of reference; actual review times, beta review times, and build processing times for any given app can depend on a variety of factors.

Where are these App Store review times coming from?

The numbers shown represent an average* of actual App Store review times, TestFlight beta review times, and build processing times encountered in the wild by teams using Runway.
* or, more accurately, a truncated mean

Why are App Store review times a thing, and where can I learn more about the review process?

For some context, we recommend checking out Apple’s App Review documentation and the App Store Review Guidelines.

Why are TestFlight beta review times a thing, and where can I learn more about the beta review process?

If you’re sharing TestFlight beta builds with external testers, Apple requires a review of the first build of each new version. (Subsequent builds for a given version won’t need a review, nor will any builds that will only be going to internal testers.) For some more context, we recommend checking out Apple’s TestFlight beta testing documentation and the App Store Review Guidelines.

What’s the App Store Connect build processing time about?

Once you’ve successfully uploaded a build to App Store Connect, there’s an additional wait before the build is available to distribute to testers or submit for review — during which time you’ll see the build’s status show as “Processing”. It’s normal to see processing times anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. For a bit more context (but not much), check out Apple’s Uploading builds documentation.

Wasn’t there another site for this stuff?

Yep — Dave Verwer (of iOS Dev Weekly fame) published crowdsourced App Store review times on appreviewtimes.com up until March, 2019. He felt (and we agree) that issues around long or unpredictable wait times in prior years had been largely solved. Read his full explanation here.

We do still think a page like this is interesting, and perhaps even useful. There are occasional variations in App Store review times, and it’s still nice to get a read on recent review times across the iOS world.  If a recent app submission is taking a bit longer than usual, don’t fret – maybe others have had a similar experience lately. On the flipside, it’s fun to see just how fast App Store review times are trending these days.

One notable difference with this new page is that it pulls from actual data on recent app review times, versus crowdsourced estimates. Also, the data on TestFlight beta review times and build processing times is unique to this new site!

What about Android and Play Store review times?

We would love to make this a resource for the Android side as well, surfacing average Play Store review times. Unfortunately, we're currently limited by the fact that the Google Play Publishing API does not return in-review statuses. As soon as that changes, we'll pull in Android review times here as well!

Still releasing apps the old way?
