A local police officer has been recognized for her work investigating historical crimes and missing people.

Sergeant Kathy Edwardsen was noted by the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police in Moose Jaw this week.

Chief Jonathan Bergen said Edwardsen does her job with care and compassion.

“Sgt. Edwardsen communicates regularly with those who are missing loved ones or have been affected by violence and trauma to keep them informed and connected to the investigation,” Bergen said.

“Her concern and compassion is evident and she regularly participates in walks and awareness events to support families, while also working to find new and innovative ways to raise awareness and generate new investigative leads.”

Edwardsen was nominated by PAPS administration, who said that in addition to working on cold cases, Edwardsen also advocates for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and advances the Calls to Justice.

The push to keep old case files in the public mind is not limited to the local area as she also tries to extend the awareness across Western Canada and into the United States.

“Sgt. Edwardsen has a positive attitude and is a strong role model for our service,” said Deputy Chief of Police Farica Prince. “She is a courageous leader in our community and serves with professionalism and compassion.”

Edwardsen has been a PAPS member since 2001 but, before that, worked as an EMT and with the Canadian Armed Forces.

Other skills include being a trained crisis negotiation, forensic interviewer and co-chair of PAPS’ Committee on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

She also helped develop the Métis Mentorship Program which ended up with the service hiring the mentees as police recruit.
