Games research company EEDAR this week launched its new report into the state of gaming in the United States, which includes some fascinating stats. A free version of the full report offers a breakdown of six types of gamers, based on their activities. It also shows different gaming habits based on demographics and life stages.

The report is based on interviews with more than 5,000 people who had played a video game in the month of the survey. It found that 67 percent of Americans play video games, representing an audience of more than 211 million people.

  • 34 percent use only mobile devices
  • 59 percent use a mobile device as well as a PC or console
  • 27 percent use a mobile device, a PC and a console
  • They spent an average of $55 on games in the last six months
  • They spend an average of 12 hours a week playing games

The report splits the gaming audience into six sectors:

  • Super Gamers (13 percent) are “super invested” hardcore gaming fans.
  • Console Warriors (14 percent) spend much of their time playing multiplayer action games.
  • Transitionals (11 percent) are adults who’ve spent their lives gaming, but now squeeze gaming into their busy lives.
  • Easy Accessors (17 percent) are young gamers who primarily play whatever they can access, most often mobile games.
  • Daily Dabblers (19 percent) are older gamers who regularly play social and casual games.
  • Incidental Players (26 percent) play mobile games occasionally.

The report also looked into activities associated with gaming. Seventy percent of gamers watch video content online, mostly to look for tips and solutions. Four percent stream themselves playing games. Thirty-three percent say they’ve bought or played a game because they watched someone play it online. Twenty-six percent they did not buy a game because they were satisfied with watching it played online.
