If you've ever wanted to try lobster but haven't fancied forking out a small fortune for the dish, you're in luck. Budget supermarket Lidl is selling whole cooked lobster for £2.99.

The "sustainable deluxe whole cooked lobster" was originally sold for £4.99 but has been discounted for customers who collect a 40 per cent off voucher first. The offer is only available until 20 March and is limited to one voucher per transaction.

Last year, Lidl became the first UK supermarket to offer Marine Stewardship Council certified lobster with  their Canadian catch. The lobsters come from New Brunswick, where the fishery is managed to protect healthy stocks ; there is a fishing season of just two months to make sure  numbers remain  buoyant and the crustaceans are in the best possible condition.

Toby Middleton, programme director of the north-east Atlantic for the MSC, said: "Lidl have worked closely with the MSC over the past year to build up their range of MSC-certified fish and shellfish.

"It's a real commitment to demonstrably sustainable sourcing that is providing a benefit to their customers."

Telegraph columnist Xanthe Clay tried Lidl's budget lobster last year and rated it the best value for money, describing it as "briny" in flavour and "reasonably tender."
