Police chief salary tops charts in Winnipeg

Winnipeg Police Service Chief Danny Smyth pulled in nearly $300,000 last year.

On Thursday, the City of Winnipeg released its Public Compensation Disclosure list as per provincial law. Smyth earned a total of $294,113, which made him the top earner in 2022. Smyth’s compensation may or may not include a combination of salary and taxable benefits, overtime, retroactive pay adjustments, retirement allowance, sick pay cash out, vacation pay cash out or back pay. For comparison, Toronto’s police chief made $355,012 in 2022, according to Ontario’s Sunshine List, which lists all public servants’ salaries over $100,000.

Two top city staff round out the top three earners in Winnipeg — CAO Michael Jack and COO Dave Wardrop — earning $281,590 and $245,789, respectively. Christian Schmidt, the chief of Winnipeg Fire & Paramedic Services collected $239, 370 in 2022.

In former mayor Brian Bowman’s final year in office, he earned a salary of $227,105. The base salary for a city councillor was $98,175.
