What a week it’s been. In the aftermath of the George Floyd murder at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, the country erupted in protests and violence. Many of us watched in horror as peaceful protests turned violent when bad actors provoked police and police provoked peaceful protesters.
We’ve known about systemic racism for a long time – from the Jim Crow laws post Civil War to the Civil Rights movement of the 60s, to the Rodney King beating in 39 years ago to where we are today. Some might say that “we’ve made progress,” and yes we have, but we still have a long way to go.

As a white man, I’ll never be able to fully understand the personal impacts of systemic racism. What I can do is vote, and work to eradicate injustice and foster not just equality, but equity. There is much to be done, but we can start by simply acknowledging that biases exist in all of us. I’m by no means an expert on the topic, but I have had some training in my non-profit work. This Vox article is a good primer on what is called implicit bias. Take a few minutes to learn more.

The team and I had a discussion about client communication at our staff meeting last week. I suggested that we offer a Zoom webinar Q&A for clients and friends, but was concerned that we’re all tired of video conferencing. So, we decided to ask you:

The only thing to report on the investment front is that we conducted our semi-annual reconstitution and rebalance of the Green Sage Sustainability Portfolio on Monday. I’ll be working on the report and hope to have it out to you by the end of the month.
Other than that, the markets have mostly shrugged off the civil unrest, COVID-19 and other negative events to make for a pretty uneventful market week. We ae continuing to maintain our capital preservation stance in our diversified mutual fund portfolios.
