Beyoncé’s Lemonade Is Making the Lemon Emoji Very Popular

Use of the emoji has been much higher than normal on Twitter since Beyoncé released her latest album and accompanying film.

Beyoncé—commander of the attention of the entire Internet—has given her Midas touch to another cultural artifact: the lemon emoji.

Since dropping her new album Lemonade on Tidal/HBO on Saturday (and other services in the days after), use of the digital fruit on Twitter has gone off the charts. Well, not totally off of them, but still really high. (See: Actual chart above.) In April, there have been more than 2 million tweets including at least one lemon emoji—and 62 percent of them have been tweeted since Saturday. There were also 1.8 million tweets in April with the bee emoji, which is the symbol of the Beyhive, the collective name of Beyoncé fans everywhere.

During this week’s #LEMONADE tweet storm the average number of lemon emojis per tweet was three and the average number of bee emojis was two, according to Twitter. The social networking service didn’t provide data for any other fruits, but we’re imagining somewhere out there a little digitized strawberry is feeling really left out right now.
