Announcing a Sustainable Web Design book from A Book Apart

Written by Tom Greenwood - January 6, 2021

In summer 2019, I was having lunch with a friend and she said that she was trying to think about what she would do if she had no commitments and didn’t need to think about money. It got me wondering, “What would I do?”.

I imagine there are many exciting things that people would say in response to this question, from traveling the world to building house or trying to make it big as a musician.

My answer, however, was weirdly niche and specific. I wanted to write a book on Sustainable Web Design for the publisher, A Book Apart.

Our team at Wholegrain Digital has been at the forefront of pushing sustainability in the web design sector over the past few years and I had a burning desire to share that knowledge and experience more widely. Perhaps even more importantly, I wanted to help establish Sustainable Web Design as a topic that our industry should take seriously.

As a specialist publisher of easy-to-read web design books, and with something of a cult following, it was clear in my mind that A Book Apart was the ideal publisher to help achieve this goal.

After that lunchtime thought experiment, I went straight home and wrote an application to the publisher, not knowing whether it would ever come to anything. Now, 1.5 years later I’m delighted to announce that my book, imaginatively titled Sustainable Web Design, is now available to pre-order from, you guessed it… A Book Apart!

If you’re curious about how we can create websites and web services that are better for people and planet, then this book is for you.

You don’t need any prior knowledge. The book walks you through the key concepts from how web products impact the environment, to the practical actions we can take in design and development, as well as how to sell sustainability in web projects, and even a look at how climate change could impact web services themselves.

If that tickles your interest, then pre-order Sustainable Web Design today, and it’ll be with you shortly.
