Russia is seeking to undermine international order and its computer hackers have recently attacked the UK’s energy, telecommunications and media sectors, the nation’s cybersecurity chief is to warn today.

Ciaran Martin, chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), will say that “the international order as we know it is in danger of being eroded”.

The attacks by Russia are understood to include an attempt to infiltrate the energy network on election day.

It comes as the NCSC, an arm of the government’s listening agency, GCHQ, confirmed that there had been more than 600 attacks against government, business and critical infrastructure since it began work last October. Such attacks involve attempts to breach national security or steal intellectual property.
