The World’s Newest Michelin 3-Starred Restaurant Is in London

The Ledbury was elevated to the guide's highest honor. Another 24 restaurants received their first star or a higher rating than last year.

A number of restaurants in Great Britain and Ireland must be feeling pretty chuffed today.

On Monday evening, the Michelin Guide announced its 2024 stars for the region, with an impressive 25 restaurants receiving either their first star or an elevated ranking compared with last year. Most notably, there’s a new three-star restaurant: London’s the Ledbury, helmed by the chef Brett Graham. Elsewhere, six of the new additions fell into the two-star category, while 18 eateries received one star.

The Ledbury joins eight other restaurants that retained their three-star status this year. There, Graham and his team are whipping up a £210 ($265) tasting menu featuring ingredients like mushrooms grown in-house and deer from the restaurant’s own small estate. The Michelin Guide said that its inspectors felt they had never eaten better at the Ledbury, allowing the establishment to reach the little red book’s highest echelon.

As far as two-star restaurants go, the biggest news is that the guide elevated two Indian restaurants to that honor for the first time ever: Opheem in Birmingham and Gymkhana in London. The former sees the chef Aktar Islam offering progressive and creative Indian cuisine, while the latter is led by Siddharth Ahuja, who serves diners superb versions of Indian classics. Rounding out the new two-stars are London’s Trivet and Brooklands (which skipped the one-star honor altogether), Crieff’s the Glenturret Lalique, and County Cork’s Terre.

The 18 new one-stars were unsurprisingly led by London, which has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city that the U.K. and Ireland guide inspects. This year, 11 establishments in the English capital were added to the guide, including a few from big-name chefs like Simon Rogan, Yannick Alléno, and Gordon Ramsay. The Republic of Ireland saw three new one-star restaurants, Cumbria added two, and the small towns of Hovingham and Saint Mellion each gained one.

WATCH

In total, the Michelin Guide has honored a whopping 1,162 restaurants in the U.K. and Ireland this year. At that rate, it would take you more than three years to eat at one Michelin-recognized restaurant a day—not to mention the damage it would likely do to your bank account. The Michelin inspectors, those anonymous folks who actually go around to dine at all these spots, sure seem to have it made.
