Study: What programmers need to be able to do The annual "State of Tech Hiring" study asked around 14,000 developers and 4,200 HR managers worldwide which programming languages are most important in their day-to-day work. JavaScript leads the ranking among recruiters with 53%, followed by Java with 43% and Python with 40%. The same picture emerges among developers, only the order is different: among programmers, Python leads the ranking with 63%, JavaScript with 62% and Java with 50%. They are therefore still among the most important programming languages on the IT job market in 2024. Which skills are generally valued differently: HR managers are primarily looking for talent in the field of web development with 59%. DevOps and database software skills are in second and third place at 37% and 28% respectively. At 36%, developers also see web development in the lead, followed from skills in AI and ML at 35% and knowledge of games development at 29%. Recruiters are currently 55% looking for backend developers, 54% for full-stack experts and 45% for app developers. A job in IT offers the best prospects for the future. The IT industry association Bitkom reports that there is a shortage of more than 137,000 IT specialists in Germany, particularly in the areas of software programming, IT security and data analysis. #Cloud #CloudFirst #Developers https://lnkd.in/e9cCuJUx

Today, we’re making the first steps towards note-taking mastery. We’re diving into a life-altering approach to managing knowledge: the Zettelkasten Method. In our information-rich world, the ability to process, retain, and synthesize knowledge is crucial. For DevOps engineers and software developers, Zettelkasten can be a game-changer in managing the vast amount of technical knowledge required in our rapidly evolving field. Zettelkasten is the crown jewel of note-taking methods. Created by Niklas Luhmann, a German sociologist, it’s the secret behind one of history’s most prolific scholars. How prolific? Luhmann wrote an astounding 70 books and nearly 400 academic articles. That’s an average of two books a year, plus numerous articles, all on complex sociological topics. To put this in perspective, many academics consider publishing one book every few years a significant achievement. ... Luhmann never highlighted in books. Instead, he wrote notes in his own words, transforming Zettelkasten from a mere storage system into a powerful engine of creativity and understanding. When you write notes in your own words, you engage in a process similar to translation. This forces you to think deeply about the material, ensuring that you truly understand the concept before committing it to your Zettelkasten. +++ Day 1 of TestBustersDays 2024 Wrapped Up! What an amazing day filled with knowledge and lively discussions! We kicked off our Test Platforms Day with two insightful morning talks: Valentin Dallmeier started the day by giving us a deep dive into the webmate a11y testing platform at 9 am, showing us how it can be used for effective accessibility testing. At 11 am, Nicol Weghofer from RBI shared how they use the Yaku platform to automate compliance testing for DORA requirements. We had 82 participants engaged in the chat, and Nicole’s explanation about her nickname and the "Ananas story" was a hit! In the afternoon: At 2 pm, Marcel Veselka took us through Autonomous Testing, presenting his questionnaire results and sparking discussions about what autonomous testing truly means. This is a topic on everyone's mind! Finally, Björn Scherer wrapped up the day at 4 pm by sharing how his company is handling platform teams, explaining how Test Engineering as a Platform can function within a DevOps setup. There were lots of questions about cost distribution and the tools & frameworks they use. #AWS #Berlin #Summit #Trustsoft I had a chance to visit the AWS summit in Berlin briefly last week. 6K participants is an impressive number. My key learnings are: ➡️ GenAI/AI (and all other interpretations) is everywhere. The prerequisite of the proper implementation is the company has to be in the cloud - finally, another argument for those who still hesitate:-) ➡️ Trustsoft is in a progressive business, but nothing is granted. It is essential to work constantly on the competencies to grow and deliver complex solutions to clients, which allows us to understand clients from the top perspective. I am happy we are on this #AWS journey:-)👍 ➡️ Events like these are about networking and those 'aha' moments that inspire us. They're more about striking inspiration than delving into technical details. These encounters with "old and new friends" were the best for me. Among others, for example, this one was nice. In the picture: Anna Opas, our long-time companion, has been instrumental in guiding us through the AWS MAP processes. Anna, your KeyNote was truly a highlight of the event and we're immensely grateful for your contributions. Amidst a large number of presentations on AI topics, it was refreshing to see other equally important (or perhaps even more important) cloud topics discussed at AWS Zurich Summit last week. One of these topics was Observability and Monitoring, crucial for any Cloud Project new or existent. The presentation by Tobias Hölsch got into an overview of challenges, capabilities, trade-offs, and the expectations from AIOps. One aspect I particularly liked, was the presenter's emphasis on the concept of Observability, rather than solely focusing on Monitoring. While closely related, these concepts have distinct differences. Monitoring involves reviewing data collected from various systems and devices. In contrast, Observability builds upon this by analyzing the raw data to extract deeper insights, which can enhance operational decision-making and, when possible, enable proactive and automated responses. Through Monitoring, we can see that a problem exists, but through Observability we should be able to diagnose the problem. Furthermore, if we use AIOps, there may even be a possibility to automatically resolve some performance issues. Yeah, even I am guilty of building my foundations on top of the UNIX philosophy, programming in C (the one without pluses) and even C++ with its highly optimized object-oriented data model. Just a few days ago, I learned about yet another petty Linux / UNIX design trap that can surprise you. It's the output stream buffering in the standard C library on UNIX systems that also affects C++. In the standard library, from the UNIX design point of view an integral part of the operating system, the decision on default buffering is made based on what the output of a program is connected to. For interactive programs it is important that you see the output lines as they are emitted by the application code. Therefore the default is line buffering where a newline character flushes the buffer and the data is passed to the terminal – but only when the output file descriptor is known to be a terminal. Programs that don't talk to a terminal do not flush every line by default and thus do not produce all output if they crash before flushing the buffer. I learned about this while using Compiler Explorer when I realized that it's not possible to debug crashing programs with simple `std::println` (from the C++23 <print> header) or similar tools (writing to `std::cout`) because the output is never shown. Of course there are solutions to the problem including those as simple as using `std::println` together with `std::cerr` or changing the buffering configuration of `std::cout`. However, my first suspect was the Compiler Explorer itself, not an age old “feature” of the libc. And this can easily bite you even as a non-developer if you pipe programs output to any interactive viewer with the assumption that the program has a text output that is line-buffered.

When Gregor Hohpe and Bobby Woolf published Enterprise Integration Patterns: Designing, Building, and Deploying Messaging Solutions in 2003, they gave us a toolkit to understand and navigate complex integration challenges. Over two decades later, their work continues to provide valuable insights, especially as organisations transition to more distributed and API-focused architectures. In Enterprise Integration Patterns Reloaded – Part 1 (find the link in the first comment), I reflect on how these patterns align with modern integration needs and the evolution of tools and methodologies. The blog series aims to bridge the gap between the foundational ideas of Hohpe and Woolf and the realities of today’s enterprise systems.
