I am very far from being a testing zealot, but of course as a software engineer I use testing to help me ensure that the software I'm writing does what I think (and hope) it should do. A major less known benefit of writing tests *before* you write your tested code is that it helps define how your interface (in the context of interracting with code, not necessary OOP) *should* be. Otherwise you might write your tested code first, and then writing your test (or other consuming code) you could find that it is awkward to invoke. Writing tests first sometimes helps. Not always, but sometimes.

I have always wanted to do tech, especially diving into the aspect of tech that would further fuel my passion of being a Solution Provider (in respect to solving problems of Consumers) as an entrepreneur. The first few individuals I spoke to about diving into the tech world washed down my morals😅😁(it dropped from 100% to 0%). It's Not like they were bad people but they Just didn't think it was something I could do or probably I was only passionate about the money. I must confess, I felt really bad at that point and those thoughts became overwhelming. The "What IF" factor came in and I was always doubting every step that I needed to take to seek for information or start a course... Still In that state, I Decided to reach out to Joshua Olabode Before I dive into what I am about to say..I would like to say, surround yourself with people who believe in your abilities and encourage you to Push yourself beyond your comfort. This is not to negate the fact that so many people go into various career path for the Wrong Reasons and get frustrated eventually🤣. Definitely! Tech isn't for the faint hearted 🤣🤣🤣....I reached out to him and I can remember him saying..why not? I believe you can do it, But you need to have a strong Why😌😌... Kenyans! We should call our Unicorns - Kenicorns! We often hear about Unicorns - those billion-dollar tech companies dominating the US and other similar markets. Personally, I along with my team are trying tooth and nail so that we reach Unicorn status, however for a Kenyan or even an African entrepreneur, reaching a Unicorn status can be an uphill task given the size of our economies. Many outstanding and valuable startups may never achieve there, which can be demotivating for our founders. I think it's time we carve out our own niche. We should coin the term **Kenicorns** for Kenyan companies valued at 10 billion KES and above. In fact, I am thinking Kenyan startups which are Kenicorns, should aspire to scale higher to be Africorns, and later work even harder to reach Unicorn status! So, how many Kenicorns do we have in our vibrant Kenyan startup ecosystem? List the Kenicorns you know and tag them as we give them some spotlight. Please bhai, clean code likha kro 🥺 I have to go through nightmares in some of my experiences while contributing to some codebases. It’s working no doubt, but code is written so badly that doing further integrations is counter productive. You should start doing these from your university times: ✅ Read Clean Code Book by Robert Cecil Martin ✅ Follow Naming Conventions - Use clear and descriptive names for variables, functions, and classes. - Avoid abbreviations and ensure names convey intent. ✅ Keep It Stupid Simple - Write straightforward and concise code. - Break down complex problems into smaller, manageable functions. ✅ DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) - Eliminate duplicate code by creating reusable functions and modules. - Promote consistency across your codebase. ✅ Write Meaningful Comments - Not unnecessary comments as your code should speak itself. - Only Explain the “why” behind complex logic, not the “what.” - Keep comments up-to-date to avoid confusion. ✅ Refactor Regularly - Continuously improve your code for better readability and performance. - Remove dead code and optimize existing structures. 💡Day 5 of talking about product management The product management introductory course with Tech4Dev is gradually coming to an end. This week we were shared into different groups and given capstone projects to work on. My group; group 5 was assigned to to design and develop a career mentorship platform that caters specifically to women. The platform should aim to connect aspiring female professionals with experienced mentors in their chosen fields, while also providing ample networking opportunities. The platform will feature a range of resources that will help women tackle gender bias in the workplace, empowering them to succeed in their professional lives. 💡Our team's mission is to create a platform that is not only user-friendly and intuitive but also addresses the unique challenges that women face in their careers. 💡Our main tasks were as follows ● The problem statement ● A high-level overview of the solution ● The market viability of this product - what is the overall market size? ● What is your target market? ● What research questions would you consider asking your target market during the research process? ● What features will this product have? ● Prepare a 6-month roadmap for this product ● Prepare a user flow-chart for the end-to-end journey of this feature ● What metrics will you measure for this product? ● What are the goals of the product? ● Craft a product vision. We further, subdivided into teams,so that each person will work on a task,and my team was in charge of finding out our target market, and curating research questions. 💡During one of our meetings,we had difficulty picking a particular target market. Since our platform is going to be for women,we contemplated if it'll just be for Nigerian women,or African women at large. 💡Another difficulty we had was with our feature prioritization. It was hard deciding what we wanted as a feature,and what won't be a feature. During our brainstorming session, we had to conduct a competitive analysis to understand our direct and indirect competitors. 💡An example of our direct competitor, was, She Leads Africa and an example of our indirect competitor, was LinkedIn. LinkedIn as an indirect competitor was surprising,but because LinkedIn also offers courses,towards career growth and mentorship,it was considered. 💡We picked our revenue model, which was the Freemiuim model. 💡This model allows us to offer our mentorship for free,but if users want to get the best of it, like 24hour access to mentors,and masterclasses, they will subscribe to the paid version. This is just a sneak peek of what our platform would look like. PS: it is not a real App we are creating,this is more of a practical assignment and project we are doing to give us insight into the life of a product manager. Each of these models is designed to respond naturally, making them versatile and valuable across a variety of applications! My Journey to Becoming a Software Engineer: Part 2 This post is a continuation of my journey — if you missed the first part, you can find it in my earlier posts. We finished the last part on the point when I had just gotten into university in 2011. Getting into university was relatively easy with my grades, and I was awarded a scholarship. But soon, a new goal emerged: financial independence. I didn’t want to rely on my parents. I wanted to support myself, and that meant finding a way to earn money while still studying. At first, I thought about becoming a professional dancer to make ends meet. But my boyfriend at the time suggested something that seemed ambitious—"Why not work as a programmer?" It felt ambitious and crazy to me because I came from a family with a Soviet mindset, where the belief was that you need to graduate first to get a high-paying job. But my boyfriend gave me an example of his friend who had started younger than I was. I was only 18, and I had no formal experience. I thought, “Who would hire me?” But with his encouragement, I decided to take the plunge. For two solid weeks, I taught myself HTML and CSS. I was busy at university during the day, so I worked late into the night, building simple static websites based on Photoshop designs and creating a small portfolio from scratch. I really enjoyed the process of studying, and I was determined to prove to myself that I could do this. Then came the nerve-wracking part: applying for jobs. I reached out to companies, being completely honest about my lack of experience but emphasizing my eagerness to learn. Most turned me down, but one person saw something in me and offered a unique deal. He would handle client interactions, and I’d do the development work. We’d split profits 50/50. With that, I got my first real job in tech. And in just two weeks, I went from dependent student to someone earning her own money. That first paycheck was a powerful moment—I felt like I had control over my future. Takeaway: Sometimes, all you need is one person who believes in you.
