Re: Police in Quebec, Ontario, N.B. make 46 arrests in anti-child porn operation, online, Dec. 1. Huge kudos to the police officers involved in these arrests. Many officers who investigate such horrific crimes can become traumatized by repeatedly seeing photos of despicable, depraved acts carried out against very young, helpless children. Yet in Canada it is rare to see such child predators sentenced harshly. The purpose of any justice system must be the protection of the very young and elderly. Currently in Canada, that simply is not happening. Our justice system is a revolving door. The Justin Trudeau government has watered down sentencing, including doing away with many mandatory minimum sentences for very serious crimes such as sex offences. Unfortunately, the internet has been the gift that keeps on giving to those who prey on vulnerable children. Young children are having their very lives destroyed simply for the sexual gratification of depraved individuals. Very stiff sentencing would act as an excellent deterrent to help curb what has become a growing trend.

LARRY COMEAU

(We are paying the price for the Trudeau government’s soft-on-crime policies. It’s time for change.)

Early election

Re “Liberal analogy stinks” (Lorrie Goldstein, Dec. 24): Trudeau already stole Christmas by reckless spending, thus pushing up mortgage rates and causing landlords to jack up rents for those who can’t afford to buy homes. Now, he and (Environment Minister Steven) Guilbeault will make sure anyone who doesn’t have a lush government job will never again have the luxury of a basic vehicle. They have no place to charge them let alone buy them at the outset. You two are the Scrooges of future Christmases. All I want for Christmas is an early election!

LORI CRANK

(Most Canadians want an election sooner rather than later. We look forward to tossing these Liberals from office — they have done too much damage)

Disarming

With all this EV talk, Canada’s embarrassing world and home standing, and this all-around instability in the world, the Liberals once again slip in their never-ending legislation on disarmament of lawful gun owners, leaving only criminals access to whatever illegal firearms they can lay their hands on. This is totally unjustified from a government with no military to speak of and, may I say, a disgusting, underhanded move.

JOSEPH ZACCONI
OTTAWA

(Their obsession with this is troubling. A change in government will fix it)
