We’ve been having a great time highlighting some of the best Airbnbs from coast-to-coast, and that train isn’t stopping any time soon. However, the return of international travel also means we’re going to spread our wings a little bit, and start covering some of the best, most unique, and most luxurious Airbnb options around the world. And hoo boy, is there a lot to start daydreaming about.
To kick things off, we’re headed to California’s Joshua Tree National Park, where you’ll find one of the most incredible examples of ‘organic architecture’ ever- the Kellogg Doolittle House. This out-of-this-world estate took over two decades to finish, and is available for the first time ever thanks to the whole ‘Airbnb Luxe’ offerings. Trust us, it more than lives up to that category.
The house goes by a few names… Architectural Digest calls it the ‘Doolittle House’ (after the people it was built for), while Dwell prefers the ‘High Desert’ moniker. There actually seems to be no established name for it, and the architect, Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, is exceedingly hard to track down on the internet. Either way, both are quick to shower praise upon it, using words like ‘sublime’ and ‘Leviathan’.

It’s the Leviathan side we’re more interested in. According to Kellogg himself, the intent of the 5,200ish sq. ft. home was to create the imagery of a gigantic beast asleep amongst the landscape. Which is also why you see those interconnected ‘ribs’ serving as a roof to the place. Of course, they double as beautiful skylights for the interior, which is mostly adorned with handcrafted furnishings meant to complement to home itself. It’s like Art Nouveau meets modernism, and we love it.
We say mostly because there are a couple of recent additions to the home as well. Like, for example, a custom-made Hästens bed in the main bedroom. Does it look like an ordinary, circular bed? Absolutely. Is it? Not really… as the Robb Report pointed out, beds of similar size from Hästens are in the $500,000 USD range, and that’s without the custom design attached.
Funnily enough, the home has only started to garner the same level of attention that one of his inspirations, Frank Lloyd Wright, regularly receives. However, with the Kellogg Doolittle House now so prominently available, we think it’s only a matter of time before the rest of his designs get the praise they deserve.
And before you ask- no, this being a relatively ‘underground’ name does not mean that it comes at a discount. If you’re hoping to spend a few days here with some pals, be prepared to fork over the big bucks, as prices start around $10,000 CAD, and with a 3-night minimum rule. Even still, we’re putting this firmly on our travel bucket list.
