Documentary studio XTR has announced the creation of Radio XTR, a podcast division that will be the company’s home for audio-based projects.

The Radio XTR unit will be based out of the company’s Silver Lake, California office with a mandate to create, develop and produce original non-fiction podcasts, the first of which will premiere this fall.

Radio XTR will launch with a documentary deep-dive called Human Drama Thing, hosted by Emmy-winning filmmaker Davy Rothbart (This American Life) and David Weinberg (KCRW). The series will cover documentary films and include interviews with filmmakers and subjects alike covering classic docs Paris is Burning, Roger & Me, American Movie, Tiger King and more.

The move into podcasting is XTR’s latest expansion in the digital space following the launch of the company’s global streaming platform, Documentary+, at the beginning of this year.

The newly-formed division also announced a partnership with SomeFriends, a premium podcasting company with the mission of championing inclusion through diversity, with co-founder Kareem Rahma serving as a senior advisor to XTR.

Additionally, Radio XTR has tapped podcast host, comedian and writer Ashley Ray Harris (TV, I Say) to produce a new series that will stream exclusively on Documentary+.

Radio XTR’s slate also includes the investigative podcast series Shelved, produced in partnership with Audible and Gunpowder & Sky. The series will look at songs and albums that were shelved for various reasons, and is based on music journalist Tom Maxwell’s article of the same name, published on Longreads.

Other planned projects for Radio XTR will span the true crime, pop culture and autobiographical genres.

“XTR’s focus has always been to build the best nonfiction studio in the world and podcasts are the next evolution of that and have always been part of the roadmap,” said Justin Lacob, XTR’s head of development, in a release. “With the launch of Documentary+, we are able to house some of the best documentaries of our time and give audiences what they want — we’re excited to explore audio as a new way to dive into nonfiction stories and give it our own spin.”
