Who Should Blockchain Worship?

As a recently hired full-time product manager in the blockchain space, I’m starting to consider the most valuable traits or skills one needs in order to make a dent in this industry. The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced there’s a dissonance between what people in the blockchain space think is necessary to make an impact and what is actually needed

In a conversation around the lack of demand of products like Maker, my friend David Sun made an interesting point.

If you look at the demographic of people in our industry, we all worship a developer economist

David’s comment has some powerful implications. First, If everyone aims at being Vitalik, there will be a bunch of infrastructure projects and other layer one solutions without the “killer applications”. Secondly, the idea of an end user seems almost out of grasp.

One may argue that the current lack of “building for humans” is a function of the current state of the blockchain space because we need the infrastructure to build on top. Yet, my belief aligns more with the myth of the infrastructure phase.

First there is a breakout app, and then that breakout app inspires a phase where we build infrastructure that makes it easier to build similar apps

With this in mind, we should start to heavily consider the downsides of looking up to the Vitaliks and embrace the idea that the true heroes are those building consumer facing products aimed at adoption.
